John McKenzie, Dundee

Hi all, Newbie here, finding my feet.
Trying to go through Scottish records is a quagmire, well for me anyway. I am trying to trace my family's Scotland branch. What I know is James McKenzie was born in Cowgate, Dubdee, on Feb 12th 1856. His father was John McKenzie and his mother was Jean Hacker or something similar. The cert is rather indecipherable. I found three John McKenzies in the 1841 census who were aged 15, 25, and 35 at the time. The 25 year old one is a bad transcription in my opinion. I do not think the surname is McKenzie but I will not rule it out. The most likely is the 15 year old who would be 28/29 when his son, James, was born in 1856. One of these John's is my Gx2grandfather.
Can anyone help me here as how I can validate any of this and where do I go from here?
Thank you,
