Hi Dave,

Have not got a certificate for Kate but unless she was a twin with John, the boy that died the day he was born in 1884 Kate was either born 1885 or 1886. My grandmother was definitely born 1889 [have her birth certificate] as she was 6 years older than her youngest sister Mae born 1895.

Did you know that Margaret Jane [called Ma] Garden/Baird had a sister who also came to Australia? Her name was Isabella, she married here and had 3 daughters, two of whom married.

Cheers
Pam

Hello Pam,

There can be errors in the recording of the registrations and errors in the transfer to the digitised index, but I doubt all three records have such errors.

Re this birth:

# 5164/1884 BAIRD CATHERINE S JOHN O MARGARET J LEICHHARDT

Assuming there is no error, it means it was registered in1884. That means the actual birth was between about mid December 1883 and mid December 1884.

Re this birth:

# 13550/1896 BAIRD MAY A JOHN O MARGARET J LEICHHARDT

If as you say the birth was 18 May 1895, then it would be very unusual for it to be registered in January 1896. The fact that it's a high number 13550 indicates it is more likely to be a registration in June of 1896 making the birth May 1896.

Re this birth:

Name: Mary Burt Baird
Father's name: John Orr Baird
Mother's name: Margaret Jane Garden
Birth Place: Brunswick, Victoria
Registration Year: 1899
Registration Place: Victoria
Registration Number: 29003

If as you say the birth was in 1889 then what is the registration number on the certificate you have? If it is 29003 then it appears to be an error in the index.

No, I was not aware that Margaret Jane's sister also came to Australia.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Pam,

The chances of three children born to the same parents all having errors in the year of their birth in the registration is so remote I'd eat my... I don't wear a hat. :2fun:

Dave

I was interested in the combination of names for one in your post.
Catherine Keith Sheridan was born 10 April 1858 in South Australia.
BAIRD was her married surname
Sheridan was her maiden name
Keith was the surname of her maternal grandmother.
