Hello Woody,

Thank you very much.

I'm not sure about 1851. If I have the right John then he should have been in the West Indies around 1847. Perhaps he had been discharged by 1851.

I can't say those other children fit or not at the moment. So far I only have those two baptism records.

I'll have to check where I found the bit about Chatham Marine Barracks. Samuel I think was a drummer and father John a ... ???

Regards,

Dave

The marriage of son Samuel:

Marriages Sep 1869
Rice Samuel Medway 2a 710
RUSSELL Eleanor Medway 2a 710

Ellen/Eleanor's father was John Thomas RUSSELL of the Coast Guard. It is claimed that Eleanor, her father John and Samuel (a drummer) and his father John (a Bandsman) were all in the Chatham Marine Barracks. I presume that is in 1861.

Looking for John RICE born 1814 +/- 5 years in Cornwall IGI has only this one and date is one day later:

. JOHN BONES RICE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 02 JAN 1814 Kenwyn, Cornwall

Kenwyn and Truro are close enough so it looks like the right John in 1861. So is it the right one in 1851? Was he still in WI in 1851?

No sign of a John RICE born Cornwall abt 1814 still in Cornwall in 1841.

Hello Woody,

Thank you very much.

I would say it confirms the family in 1851 as being the right one. A 'Traveller' is one way to describe his previous life as a bandsman in the marines. :D That's if the 'story' about John and son Samuel being a drummer and a bandsman is correct. The pob as 'Middlesex' for John does not bother me. That's a transcription or enumerator error I think.

So 1861 HMS Racehorse ??? The name, age and pob fit but is it the spouse of Charlotte Mary?

Deaths Mar 1867
Rice John Bone 53 Medway 2a 275

What or who do we look for next? Can Charlotte Mary be found in 1871. Lots of possible deaths for a Charlotte RICE.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Woody,

Thank you very much.

No, Wilson is another middle name like Ritchie that I have no clue about.

I think I found Hephzibah's marriage and the family in 1881 although it has a diff pob for her.

I'm not actually chasing the children, just trying to see If I have the right John for the father of Mary C born abt 1847 Bermuda. Mary C's 1868 marriage has her father as John Bone RICE, deceased.

One researcher working backwards from the marriage of son Samuel seemed to come to the conclusion Samuel and his father John and Samuel's spouse and parents were all at some time living in the Chatham Marine Barracks.

Seems we can't confirm that by searching for RICE. Perhaps we should now look for the other family.

Hello Woody,

I think it's back to square one. I think you will find that Samuel who married Ellen daughter of the Coast Guard man was born in Leeds and in 1871 was a 'bandsman' also born Leeds, hence not the Samuel son of John & Charlotte.

1881
RG11 Piece / Folio 3430 / 57 Page 2
Census Place Tupton, Derby, England
Dwelling Incline House
Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
Edward BUXTON Head M Male 38 Youlgreave, Derby, England Railway Labourer
Ann BUXTON Wife M Female 32 Brampton, Derby, England
George BUXTON Son Male 14 Walton, Derby, England Colliery Labourer
Alice BUXTON Dau Female 4 Brampton, Derby, England
Edward BUXTON Son Male 1 Whittington Moor, Derby, England
Samue RICE Boarder M Male 39 Leeds, York, England Railway Labourer
Ellen RICE Boarder M Female 35 Dover, Kent, England

Harry RICE Boarder Male 9 Rochester, Kent, England Scholar
Lily RICE Boarder Female 7 London, Kent, England Scholar
Alice RICE Boarder Female 5 New Southgate Ex, Middlesex, England Scholar
Samuel RICE Boarder Male 3 London S Battersea Park, London, Middlesex, England
Anne RICE Boarder Female 1 Manchester, Lancashire, England

Births Jun 1841
Rice Samuel Leeds 23 393
Rice Samuel Leeds 23 395

It's still possible the father of Samuel born Leeds is John RICE but is it John Bone RICE or not? Or is John father of John Samuel then John Bone RICE? Or are neither John Bone RICE?

This is so much fun. :2fun:
