I apologise if this is a little vague but I don't have a lot to go on. The name of my ancestor is John Stobbs/Stobs, father Matthew Stobbs. According to John Stobb's marriage in 1873 Gateshead, Durham his birth year is estimated at 1851 and it doesn't specifiy a place of birth. His father is named as Matthew no occupation given. John's wife is Mary Ann Bell or Belle aged 18 estimated date of birth 1855 and her father is named John Bell.

Can anyone help with this family please? I would like to know more about Matthew Stobbs and who John's mother was and any siblings.

The 1881 Census John Stobs aged 29 born Tanfield, Durham and wife Mary A. aged 26 born Lanchester, Durham.

I do know that between 1881-1882 John Stobbs and wife Mary Ann emigrated to the US where the name became Stobs. It's his earlier life in England that I would like to discover more.

Thank you.

Thank you Ellie7 and emeltee. This will certainly help me. You might have something there a birth for John Guthrie in 1851 something I should have considered.

Can you tell me please from the 1861 Census the occupation of Matthew Stobb? Also does it give the place of birth for John Stobb aged 9?

I don't have access to Ancestry or FMP.
Thank you.

Goodness those are lovely photos. Where did you find those? I have to question their marriage in Durham Cathedral. Their marriage record states St. James Gateshead, Durham.

Interesting history in these links Ellie7. I noticed that in the 1861 census the young 9 year old John Stobb is a coal miner. I understood that in 1843 it became illegal for women and any child under the age of 10 to work underground. But John is doing just that.

Thank you.

Is there any information about Mary Ann Bell's parents and their marriage? Her father was John and her mother was Margaret ??? (surname unknown). I believe John Bell was also a coal miner. Mary Ann Bell was born in Lanchester, Durham in 1855. I think she had a sister named Frances born in 1842 Newcastle on Tyne.
Thank you.
