I can't find anything to show the 1874 death for a Joseph E is the right one. No middle initial in marriage or 1851 census or shipping record or birth and death of son John W.
The 1875 and 1879 notices indicate Joseph is still living.

That's the old Balmain cemetery that was bulldozed. Fragments of the headstones are along the side of what is now a park.
