Hello crankypants,

John JOHNSTON b. abt 1830 Victoria or Scotland ? d. 1916 Gordon

married 1875 Sydney

Rachel Mary Ann Kemp RILEY b. ? d. 1945 Glebe

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 11 September 1875 p.1
MARRIAGES
JOHNSTON-RILEY.-September 4, by the Rev. T. Gainford, at the Mariners' Church, John Johnston, youngest son of the late Captain John Johnston, Peterhead, Scotland, to Rachel Mary Ann Kemp Riley, youngest daughter of William Riley, of this city.

Possible death but nothing yet to support it.

Death # 6943/1939 JOHNSTON JOHN JOHN ANNE SYDNEY

I doubt the 1916 death is the right one. John's parents are John & Ann. There are TWO Captain John JOHNSTONs to complicate things. One lived in Melbourne and the other in Sussex street in Sydney.

Death # 7601/1916 JOHNSTON JOHN THOMAS MARY CHATSWOOD ??

The Sydney Morning Herald - Friday 22 December 1916 p.6
DEATHS
JOHNSTON.-December 21, 1916, at his son's residence, Rosedale-road, Gordon, John Johnston, aged 86.

Please see if you can find a JOHNSTON at Rosedale-road, Gordon in 1913. Thanks.

1903 N.S.W Electoral Roll - West Sydney - Blackwattle Polling-place
JOHNSTON John, 89 Glebe-street, storeman
JOHNSTON Rachael, 89 Glebe-street, domestic duties
Please see what you can find. Thanks.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. None of those match. I think with Thomas & Mary instead of John & Ann on that 1916 one and no matching names at that address I'd say that's the wrong John. But is the 1939 death the right one then?

The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) - Saturday 26 January 1867 p.4
DEATHS
JOHNSTON.-On the 22nd October, at his father's residence, Crook, Rendall, Orkney, after a lingering illness, Captain John Johnston, late of No. 4 Howard-street, West Melbourne. Deeply regretted by his wife and a large circle of friends.

The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) - Tuesday 28 May 1867 p.8
FUNERALS
THE Friends of the late Mrs. ANN JOHNSTON, relict of the late Captain John Johnston, are respectfully invited to follow her remains to the place of interment, Melbourne General Cemetery.
The funeral will leave her late residence, 4 Howard street, West Melbourne, THIS DAY (Tuesday, 23th), at two o'clock p.m.

That's enough to show the parents of my John are John & Ann.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking but I'm not sure we have enough info yet. Capt. John died in Orkney so that may be where he was born and may have moved the family later to Peterhead. Let's do the Australian connections first.

Hello crankypants,

1903 N.S.W Electoral Roll - West Sydney - Blackwattle
JOHNSTON John, 89 Glebe-street, storeman
JOHNSTON Rachael, 89 Glebe-street, domestic duties
In 1930 & 1936 Rachel is living with her son William John. There is no sign of John which is curious in that the 1939 death is the only one that has parents that match his: John & Ann.

Please see if you can find John & Rachel in 1913 E/R. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

I think the 1939 death is not the right one. John the son of the other Captain married an Anne so I think that death is their son.

It's possible the death of my John is one of the death reg without both parents listed.

I've found marriages for the eldest (Margaret Fulton) and youngest (Maggie) daughters of Captain John of Peterhead. I have noticed three births of a John JOHNSTON in the Orkneys so I'll do some more searching.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

 Captain John of Peterhead must have married twice. :D

Eldest daughter Margaret Fulton JOHNSTON married Thomas CARDIFF in 1875.

Youngest daughter Maggie (Margaret Ross JOHNSTON) married George Richard OHLSON in 1876 and her death reg and the funeral notice for Mary JOHNSTON have Mary as Maggie's mother.

Yet we have the funeral notice for Captain John's spouse as being Ann.

As far as Orkneys and Aberdeen are concerned there are 5 possible marriages for an Ann to a John JOHNSTON.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much.

Ellenor M JOHNSTON b. 1911 d. aft 1940

It may or may not be Ellenor Melva who is in the E/R. That would depend who else is at same address.

Called Helen at funeral of her father in 1940. Probably never married.

Please see what you can find. Thanks.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. I may have a partial explanation. I just noticed her name at death:

Birth # 38000/1904 NICHOLS VERA M CHARLES T ESME I WATERLOO

Death # 28675/1969 BROOKS VERA MAUD CHARLES THOMAS ESME ILA BANKSTOWN

No doubt about his death in 1963:

Death# 19849/1963 JOHNSTON DAVID LESLIE WILLIAM JOHN ELEANOR BALMAIN

Dave

Hello crankypants,

William Henry JOHNSTON b. 1911 d. 1992 Glebe

marriage # 14810/1929 JOHNSTON WILLIAM J HAMMOND DOROTHY M SYDNEY

Dorothy May HAMMOND b. 1911 Moruya d. 1994 Glebe

1936 N.S.W Electoral Roll - West Sydney - Glebe
JOHNSTON William John, 52 Glebe street, labourer [the father of William Henry]

EDIT: The Leslie at 52 Glebe street is a brother of William John.

1936 N.S.W Electoral Roll – West Sydney – Glebe
JOHNSTON Dorothy May, 31 Glebe street, home duties
JOHNSTON William John, 31 Glebe street, labourer [?]

Curious it's not William Henry with spouse. ???

JOHNSTON William Henry Death notice 06NOV1992 Death 81 late of Glebe SMH 09NOV1992
JOHNSTON William Henry (The Judge) Died in hospital - spouse Dorothy - children William, Ronald & Eleanor.

JOHNSTON Dorothy May Death notice 28NOV1994 Death 83 late of Glebe SMH 30NOV1994
JOHNSTON, Dorothy May, November 28, 1994 (peacefully), late of Glebe, much loved wife of the late William Henry (Judge), loving mother and mother-in-law of William, Eleanor, Ronald and Irene and their close families.

The death notices say it's the son William Henry (born 1911 from age at death fits) even though he married at 18 and the marriage reg has middle initial as J. It's not a 2nd marriage for William John. He's not living at both 52 and 31 Glebe street.

Please see what you can find. Thanks.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

The 'The Judge' bit puzzles me. :D but it does tie the two together even if they are not together in E/R. Also, the children match.

EDIT: I can't find anything to show he was an actual judge.

Dave
