Son of Henry & Rebecca.

Joseph Ives, was a Colour Sergeant, 70th foot.

Served in India, and was attested in 1833. Rochester, Kent. Discharged in 1854.

Married Martha Townsend in 1857 @ Sunbury on Thames. Both widowed.

Army Pensioner in 1861 census. in Kingston, Surrey

Beer retailer/Army Pensioner in the 1871 census in Twickenham.

Can anyone see his first marriage.?

Thanks folks.

There's no mention of a wife on his Army papers and I can't see a marriage in India.

Without knowing either where he married or where his first wife was living when she died it's very hard to pin anything down.

Yes, a rather ambitious post really.:2fun:

BUT......what did cross my mind, according to his Army papers, he had an elder brother in the Army, and wished to change Regiment to be with him, which was granted.

This has got me thinking.....was John Ives..(the 'bigamist'....Maria Hills/Dolley & Floretta Bourn)) that elder brother, which is why he couldn't be found in the 1851 census..
Perhaps I've got John Ives and Floretta Bourn wrong.

The only other elder brother he had was Henry Ives b.1813, P.Risborough.(Yet another thread looming.:2fun: )

Oh well, onwards and forwards.

Thanks MLT.

According to his Army records he was in Pike Island & Youghal, Cork in 1841 and Cawnpore, India in 1851.

There is a death for a Catherine Ives in Cawnpore in 1853 but no deatils given of who she was or next of kin, just an RC Burial. Under the heading Rank it says Woman of and then there is an abbreviation of some sort which I can't read. I'll e-mail a copy to you.

Hmmm. Yes. 70th reg of foot.....now she could be the wife of either Joseph or John.:2fun:

John Ives was a widower when he married Maria Hills.

I'll see if I can find a marriage for John in India, to a Catherine, or anywhere else for that matter. I can't see any Army records for John Ives.
But as I said......there is Henry Ives yet, which I still might consider.:2fun:

Maybe I should have put all the siblings in one thread, because India is a bit of a common theme.

Thanks for the emails MLT.O0
