So far I can't place any of those three regiments in Scotland in 1818.

"At nine miles from the Nepean, having been one hour and fifty minutes in
performing that distance, we reached the Welcome Inn, kept by a jolly old
soldier named James, who rejoices in a waterloo medal, a pretty daughter,
and what was more to our purpose, some excellent bottled ale.”
( the daughter would be Mary)

The Sydney Morning Herald - Thu 30 Dec 1852 p.3
DIED.
Died on the 10th ultimo at Welcome Inn Valley, Bathurst road, Joseph James, late of the 40th Regiment, greatly regretted by all his friends, age 56

Joseph was born in Somerset so he probably enlisted in the 40th of Foot (2nd Somerset) and not 14th as that record states in post #4.

Looks as though may still have been with the 40th when he married, he received the Waterloo medal in 1815 and the PR [marriage 1818] gives his occ as soldier 40th Reg. Some soldiers were despatched to NSW and VDL in 1823.

There is a time line in Wikipedia, adds a bit more to post #4.

Thanks Geoff.

I spent a few hours at the library today so I have some images to transcribe.

Actually, I was meaning to reply re different James family.

I've done it again - not enough tags. Now I can't find this one in my tree.
