1859 Marriage solemnized at The Parish Church in the Parish of St. Paul in the County of Bristol
No. 397 - September 14 -
Joseph Peacock - full - Bachelor - Carpenter - St. Paul's - Daniel Peacock - Hawker
Elizabeth Lear - full - Spinster - - St. George's Co of Gloucester - Aaron Lear - ..? ...?
Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church, by License, by me Hugh Allan ?
Both signed

Occupation is not Fish Hawker or Hawker or Carrier. It looks like two words but the image must be poor because the copy is poor.

I find that curious also - County of Bristol in 1859 ?

Hi Dave

I think this branch were the Bristol Peacock's (some of them) as opposed to Bitton (and areas), but had family links; on a par with the Wilmott's  for information gathering!!

Hello Geoff,

Both Joseph and Elizabeth were born in Bitton.

Joseph has not been found in 1841 but they are together in Swansea in 1851 although they didn't marry until 1859 in Bristol. From 1861 onwards they are in Frome.

Looking at the census listings again I still have one puzzle apart from Joseph in 1841 and it's also 1841 for Elizabeth's younger brother Joseph.

It will take a bit to explain about Elizabeth and siblings. :D

No, father Daniel is the fish monger in Hanham.

Starting with this census which has to be explained to understand: :2fun:

1841
HO107 Piece 361 Book/Folio 27 Page 14
Registration District: Keynsham
Sub District: Oldland
Civil Parish: Bitton
Address: Warmley Hill Bitton Oldland
HODGES, George M 25 1816
HODGES, Elizabeth F 25 1816
HODGES, George M 6 1835
HODGES, Elizabeth F 3 1838
LEAR, Elizabeth F 20 1821 Shoemaker
NIPKIN, - M 25 1816
LEAR, James M 20 1821 Agricultural labourer

George senior is LEWTON but he was born before his parents married so in this census he is using his mother's name HODGES.

His father is Aaron LEWTON but he was also born before his parents married so he is using the name LEAR

So Elizabeth and Joseph LEAR in the census are siblings of George senior but both born after parents married.

There is a younger sibling Joseph baptised 19th March 1826 at Hanham Abbots, probably during his first year.

So a Joseph LEAR or LEWTON born abt 1826 in 1841 other than this one:

1841

Civil Parish: Bitton
Registration District: Keynsham
Sub-RD: Bitton
John Lear age 15 occ coal -----
Joseph Lear age 15 occ coal-----
Mary Lear age 12 occ pin-----
All born in county.

Here he is in 1851 (married in 1847 St Mary's Bitton)

1851 Wales Census
Civil Parish: Swansea
Registration District: Swansea
County: Glamorganshire
Address: - Street
LEWTON, Joseph Head Married M 25 1826 Cheese Factor (Hawking Cheese) Kingswood Gloucestershire
LEWTON, Mary Wife Married F 1828 Kingswood Gloucestershire

Thanks, but no idea Geoff. ;) A branch I've not come across so far.

Elizabeth, James and Joseph were all baptised on 19th March 1826 at Hanham Abbots. No age at baptism for any of them but later census and age at death rule out twins born 1821, so it looks like 1820, 1822, 1825.

Another indication of age:

Unassisted to Victoria
LUTON JOSEPH 30 - DEC 1857 MORNING STAR B 137 004
LUTON MARY 28 - DEC 1857 MORNING STAR B 137 004

Name: Joseph LEWTON
Date of Death: 24 Jun 1898
Place: No 15 Young street Redfern, NSW
Occupation: Formerly Railway Inspector, Late NSW Government Pensioner
***: Male
Age: 72
Place of Birth: Bristol, England
Time in Aust Colonies: 40 years in NSW
Father: Aaron LEWTON
Occupation: Dealer
Mother: Ann HODGES

I know of only the 4 children and there are no coal miners in my lot of LEWTON/LEARs - coach builder, railway labourers or market gardeners or hawkers or carriers...

Yeah, I think we had this last time, they are on that CD, but nothing conclusive elsewhere.. A question of piecing the bits together as they come up.

It's looking as though Joseph can't be found in 1841 as LUTON/ LEWTON/LEAR. He is not with his siblings and both parents died before 1841.
