I have this chaps parents as John Shirley & Virginia Brown. (If I'm correct).

But unable to find a birth.

John Shirley. 1820 – Compton, Staffordshire. Died...?
Virginia Brown, c1824 • Chester, Cheshire, Died Apr 1900 • Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.

Family not found in 1851 census.

1861 census is a bit odd, as Virginia is down as Jane Shirley.

Is John Shirley a bargee, bargeman, or anything like that.??

There are a host of baptisms in FamilySearch for the Shirleys, with mothers name as either Virginia or Jane.

I am unable to view the original census, from 1861 to 1911.

I was snatching records from Ancestry, on the freebie weekend, and never really looked at details. Time was running out, so thats my only excuse.

Any ideas folks, and all help is appreciated.

Another one of your strange families, Steve.

From what I have found so far John Shirley married Virginia Brown in Gt Boughton, Chester in 1844. According to the variuos Censuses they had the following children
Ann 1846 Gnosall, Staffs
William 1848 Newport, Salop
Henry 1852 Adderley, Salop
Thomas 1855 Wolverhampton
Lucy 1857 Wolverhampton
Joseph 1860 Wolverhampton
Virginia 1862 Wolverhampton
Arthur 1865 Wolverhampton
Virtue 1867 Wolverhampton.

I can't find the family in 1851. In 1861 John is married to Jane in 1871 and 1881 he is with Virginia. Unless in 1861 Virginia was referred to as Ginnie and the enumerator wrote down Jane, I can't think of any other explanation. However it gets worse

To add to all that, searching the GRO site Ann, William, Henry, Lucy and Arthur have mmn Brown. I can't find Thomas or Joseph/John Joseph.
Virginia has mmn Jordan and Virtue doesn't have mmn at all.

Have fun sorting that lot out!

Just checked the later Censuses. In 1891 Virginia and son Henry are living in Falkland Street. John is a pauper in the Workhouse down as married
Virginia dies 1900 but 1901 John is still a pauper in the workhouse down as widower

Jane or Virginia Shirley......have the same p.o.b., so I can only assume she is the same person.
I thought of Ginnie, Jenny, Jeanie etc.....and I guess it's possible, and have come across similar for Regina.

Elizabeth has many variations...eg. Betty, Betsy, Beth, Eliza., Lillybeth.....and on and on, why not Virginia.?

Even my wife has so many 'pet' variations of her christian names, from various people and family members, and I dare not say what mine are.:2fun::2fun:

Hi Steve, Joseph Shirley is my Great Uncle & I've been searching for his birth cert with no luck. The Shirley's were boat people and seemed to settle in wolverhampton faulkland street which is by the waterways.
My Aunt used to live with Sarah Ann Ives when she was little. She now lives in Princess Risbourgh aged 97.
I know this is an old thread but if you do see this and have any info I would be gratefull. I think I have a photo of joseph that I can pass on.

Hi Sandra.

I think I may already have 2 photo's of Sarah Ann Ives. There is one with her dress looking like it's covered in whites circles on a dark background, the other one she's wearing a tallish hat and standing next to, what looks like a cut out of Felix the Cat.

I cannot remember who I got then from, as it's been nearly 4 years ago.

Hopefully the one you have is different.

I spent the first 21 years, from birth, of my life living in Princes Risborough.

Never found his birth, under mmn of Brown, but did have another look without success.

4 years is a long time in family history, especaily when I'm getting more grey by the day.
