The death of Joseph Watters was registered in Queensland in 1934. His parents were recorded as James and Mary Ellen Teague. I am looking for any additional information about his parents, particularly his mother.

The Sydney Mail and New South Wales Advertiser (NSW : 1871 - 1912)
Sat 24 Jun 1876

SHOULD this meet the eye of JOSEPH WATTERS,. native of Devonshire, who left England a passenger per R. M. S. Indus for India ia 1872, and in consequence of iil-bealth left India same year for Melbourne passenger per R. M. S. Tanjore, he will hear something to his advantage by communicating to his uncle. Captain DUNSTAN, old address, or to his sister, Mrs. DANIEL NICHOLLS, old address.

Thanks, Gibbo, that's most helpful.

In 1873 Joseph Watters appealed for contact with his uncle, Elijah Teague, in The Queenslander.

I am looking for an Elijah Teague who "disappeared" from England after being acquitted of murder in 1851. He had a sister who married a William Dunstan - surely too much of a coincidence that that name should appear in the 1876 advertisement.

It looks as if my Elijah made it to Oz.

Thanks, Dave. Both are relevant. I had the 1841 entry but 1851 is new to me.

Working from Gibbo's link to the obituary in #2 I found record of Joseph Watters enlistment the Royal Navy on TNA Discovery. It shows his birth date as 13 January 1852, (Calstock) which makes nonsense of the census entry, but the census entry is consistent with his declared age (85) when he died in 1934. I cannot think why he should have understated his age by three years.

Also interested to see Joseph's mother's name given as Ellen. I know Elijah Teague had a sister named Eleanor. This is almost certainly she.

I am now convinced that, even though Gibbo has found no record of him in Australia, the family believed Elijah to be there.

I can't after several hours of searching find the marriage that fits that 1851 census using Mary and Ellen and Walters and Watters.

Dave
You and me both. I have relied principally on Cornwall OPC site but used Free BMD and Family Search.

If Ellen was Eleanor, she was baptised on 7 April 1822 and would have been a 15 years old bride if she married before general registration in 1837. Not impossible, I already have one in my tree.

At Elijah Teague's trial his mother, Mary (Cowling) Teague/ Tyack. - her husband used an alias. - stated she had had 8 children. I have found baptism records of only 2, both baptised on 7 Aptil 1822 In St Agnes as Tyack.

Also at the trial Elijah was described as a schoolteacher at the Mount Horam chapel school, Chacewater/Kenwyn. If the family used this chapel, perhaps its records have been lost or permission to have them transcribed has been withheld.

Thanks for the time you have put in and for the results of your efforts.

Bit of a puzzle.

Death in 1880 in Qld.

I don't know how many ended up in America. Very little found in the usual sites or by googling. I also searched Rootsweb and that had lots of Teagues in America.

Qld. Death 1880/C01234 Albert Edward Teague - - ** born England aged 44 years
Forgot to mention that. That certainly ties in with what the family believed. Could he have adopted an alias? Guess we'll never know

P S. I see from the Queensland Gov. Archive site that there was an inquest into his death. This is unlikely to give much detail about his life so will be of little use in establishing his identity.
