Hello,

Juliette SIMONSEN b. ?

Is this possible?

The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1956) - Tuesday 10 January 1893 p.1
Births
SIMONSEN.-On the 8th inst., the wife of Jules Simonsen (Maude Leamington), a daughter. Both well.

Marriage 9229/1907 SILVIA WILLIAM A G - SIMONSEN JULIETTE M L - - SYDNEY

Death 3848/1914 SILVIA JULIETTE - JULES - MAUD - NEWCASTLE

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 21 February 1914 p.20
DEATHS
SILVIA (nee Simonsen).-February 19, at Newcastle Hospital, Juliette Silvia (nee Simonsen), of the Aladdin Pantomime Company, aged 20 years. At rest.

The newspaper clearly has her age as 20 but that must be an error. ???

Border Watch (Mount Gambier, SA : 1861 - 1954) - Wednesday 12 February 1890 p. 2
OPERA.-Mr. Martin Simonsen, who has for many years been one of the most popular promoters of opera in the colonies...The company includes Mr. Simonsen himself, who retains his old role of violinist,...; Mr. Jules Simonsen, son of the leader of the company;...

Regards,

Dave

Birth notice in 1893 and then marriage index in 1907. She was only 14 when she married  and then 1914 died. So she would have only been 20 at time of death.

Yes, it seems so. I've sent off an email for the Victorian reg.

Knowing the strange family it's probably a RC wedding although some are Presbyterian and others CofE. Some members of the family were involved with the building of a RC church in Watsons Bay. Others are buried in CofE Rookwood.

Thousands of ads in the paper for the Simonsen Opera Company.

NSW Birth indexes. She had at least 2 kids. The indexes stop at 1911:rolleyes:

Yes. As I said, strange family. They originated in the Azores and the name was SILVA but one son decided to change it to SILVIA so his descendants carried that on while his brothers carried SILVA on.

I'm about to post one for the spouse of the head of the family.

Surname: SIMONSIN
Given Names: Maude Leonora Ju
Event: B
Father: Jules Martin
Mother: Maude HORWITZ
Birth Place: MELBOURNE
Year: 1893
Reg. Number: 5706

Ju = Juliette I presume.

I did not have a good day at the library. The marriages I want are getting harder to find on film.

Hi Dave,
I was very interested to read your 2012 posts about Juliette Simonsen as my wife is related to her (by a convoluted path).

I've been unable to find out anything about her mother who I think was Maud Leamington or Lymington (aka perhaps Maude Horwitz) and her father Julius (Jules) (and what happened after his arrest in the USA).

As you have researched this family, I'd be interested in hearing from you.

Clynt

Hello Clynt and welcome to the Forum.

The family is a remote connection to my tree and I have very little more than what is posted here.

Feel free to post any queries and members here will try and help you.

Thanks Dave,
I missed that Simonsen/Horwitz marriage. Julius (Jules) Martin Simonsen's name was transcribed as Julia M. Simonsen.

Maude Leamington, I believe, was Eva C. M. Horwitz's stage name. (There is a town in Warwickshire named Leamington.) Both Jules and Maude were singers of note from a musical family. Jules used to sing "Come into the garden Maude."

In 1898, Jules (without Maude and the children) went to the U.S.A. to try to establish himself there, but he earned only $250 in 11 months. He was arrested for stealing to feed himself.

Another Simonsen that I find about is the wife of Jules' younger brother. I only know that her nickname was Cis.

Hi Clynt,

I noticed you have done some editing in TROVE so I don't have to suggest you search there. Lots of details about the touring company.

Some of the children were born on Victoria.

If you have any queries post them here or on the English or American or appropriate board.
