Hello,

This is a real puzzle ( no, I don't have many in my tree) :D

Birth Reg# 14952/1894 COOK WILLIAM E JOSEPH J W JANE W GRANVILLE

Marriage Reg# 9269/1922 COOK KENNETH PEARSSON BRITTA N SYDNEY

COOK Kenneth Death notice 25DEC1971 Death 75 late of Warriewood, formerly of Auburn SMH 27DEC1971

Death Reg# 41719/1972 COOK KENNETH GEORGE PAUL JANE LAUDAR ST LEONARDS

COOK Britta Nea Death notice 14NOV1982 Death SMH 17NOV1982

AUSTRALIAN Electoral Rolls NSW 1930 REID AURBURN NORTH
No Name Address Occupation ***
796 COOK Britta Nea 18 Hampstead Rd AURBURN Home Duties F
797 COOK Ester Mya Bobs Hampstead Rd AURBURN Home Duties F
798 COOK Kenneth 18 Hampstead Rd AURBURN Machinist M
780 COOK Ernest William Hampstead Rd AURBURN Ironworkers Assistant M

AUSTRALIAN Electoral Rolls NSW 1936 REID AUBURN NORTH
No Name Address Occupation ***
835 COOK Esther May 18 Hampstead Rd AURBURN Home Duties F
837 COOK William Ernest 18 Hampstead Rd AURBURN Attendant M
838 COOK William Ernest Junior 18 Hampstead Rd Moulder M

We have William Ernest COOK and spouse Esther May MOBBS and their son William Jr.

The age at death for Kenneth points to a birth date of 1896, two years after William was born but there is no birth reg. I believe Kenneth is a brother but I'm having problems proving it. William's parents Joseph James W COOK and spouse Jane West SANDS divorced in 1899.

The parents as listed on the death reg for Kenneth make absolutely no sense.

Please see if you can find Kenneth and spouse Britta in the Electoral Rolls for 1936.

Thanks.

Dave

Hello Juliejtp,

Thank you. I'm not sure we can make much impact on the actual puzzle. I've looked for births and deaths and marriages using the names in Kenneth's death reg assuming the second name is a middle name and a family name and I can't find anything. The only thing that fits is 'Jane' the name of William's mother.

She had a child before she married Joseph COOK and possibly she had Kenneth just before the divorce ?? A brother born 1896 two years after William is the best explanation I can come up with.

Hi Dave,

I've had a look in Sands Directory, he isnt showing as Kenneth but the is a Ken Cook, would you like the address details, as one district he was in was Auburn. Have you looked on the Australian Archives, he may have served in WW1!

Ken Cook

Sands Directory

1931 - 18 Hampstead Rd, Auburn
1932/3 - 18 Hampstead Rd
1928 - Hampstead Rd
1929 - Hampstead Rd
1930 -

Will have to leave this at the moment. There is another Ken Cook showing at different addresses, so dont know if its is him.

Hello juliejtp,

Two births:

3403/1889 COOK KENNETH S ALEXANDER AGNES B SYDNEY

3475/1898 COOK KENNETH CHARLES BARBARA GRANVILLE

There are two on the WWI Embarkation Roll

3733 age 18 printer mother Mrs B COOK Lidcombe - that's a match.

399 age 21 machinist mother Mrs Annie COOK Rushcutter's Bay

Death of the first one:
1558/1965 COOK KENNETH SINCLAIR ALEXANDER AGNES SYDNEY

Death of second one:
42054/1964 COOK KENNETH CHARLES BARBARA WYONG

Hello juliejtp,

Well, the National Archives have managed to mix up the records between 399 and 3733A. At least it says the machinist was aged 21 yrs 7 months in 1915 and that he was born in Lancashire, England and his mother is a Mrs Annie COOK. The 18 yo printer's parents are C & B COOK. (Charles & Barbara)

So the service records don't help us.

This is the one that needs deciphering:

Death Reg# 41719/1972 COOK KENNETH - GEORGE PAUL - JANE LAUDAR - ST LEONARDS

Regards,

Dave

Hello juliejtp,

Thank you for the images. We can ignore the Ken S. at Forbes St Ashfield in 1930 and other years. There is a Ken at 18 Hampstead Rd Auburn in 1930.

If the service record is correct then we have a machinist aged 21 in 1815 and who was born in Lancashire - mother's name Annie. And, we have a machinist with no NSW birth record at the same address in 1930 as the COOKs in my tree. I still say he has to be related.

Please see if you can find any of the COOKs in the 1930 Electoral Roll in msg #1 any earlier.

I'm getting no where with the names in that 1972 death reg.

Thanks.

Dave

Hi Dave

I wondered because you can't find Kenneth COOK birth in N.S.W is it possible he was born in England, also his mother's middles name seemed unusual, first thought was a mistranscription. I came across this marriage and a birth in Lancashire, what do you think.

Death Reg# 41719/1972 COOK KENNETH GEORGE PAUL JANE LAUDAR ST LEONARDS

Hello crankypants,

Yes, thank you very much. I spent a lot of time playing around with those names in the NSW BDM without finding anything. I kept hoping I suppose the Lancashire bit was wrong.

COOK Kenneth Death notice 25DEC1971 Death 75 late of Warriewood, formerly of Auburn SMH 27DEC1971

I know it is not proof but it does say Auburn and we know that a Kenneth did live in Auburn from the Electoral Rolls and the Sands Directory. That death on 25 Dec has to be the match for the 1972 NSW death reg.

So that means a Kenneth COOK born in Lancashire ends up in a house in Auburn and by coincidence the family is named COOK ?

Hi Dave

Million dollar question, is it just a coincidence or is he related somehow to the other COOK's in Auburn.

Kenneth COOK in 1901 U.K census

Address: 76 Cyprus Road, Bootle Cum Linacre, Lancashire

COOK Jane L head M abt 1861 age 40 Scotland
COOK George P son abt 1893 age 8 Bootle, Lancashire
COOK Kenneth son abt 1897 age 4 Bootle, Lancashire

(husband George P COOK not at this address)

Hello crankypants,

Thank you. That narrows down the serach for his arrival in Australia. But we still have a problem:

S/N 399 age 21 machinist mother Mrs Annie COOK Rushcutter's Bay.

Too many Annie COOKs in the NSW death index.

Hello crankypants,

I'd say we are stuck. There are way too many James COOK in the births and deaths index in NSW.

I traced Kenneth COOK's family back to 1841 census and I'm pretty sure William & Ellen COOK are Kenneth's great grandparents. The 1841 census has Ellen COOK baker with her children William, Michael, James, Margaret.

Kenneth COOK c1897 (son)
George Paull COOK c1857 (father)
Michael COOK c1819 (grandfather)
William COOK (great grandfather)

So your James COOK who married in 1864 is brother of Michael COOK.
In 1871 Michael is a Baker & Flour Dealer.

Let me know if you need anything else.
