Could someone have a look in T.N.A for Jacob Moore. Private No.954. Suffolk Regiment. 1st. Batt. 12th. Reg. of Foot.
Returned from Hobart, Australia 24th March. 1857. He was at the Eureka Stockade, Australia.
I have loads of info about the stockade gold miners already.

I've tried myself, but I get hopelessly lost. I've been trying for a week, and I can't get anywhere.
I was given a reference number PRO 3716, but I cannot remember from where.
I've tried a search using the number, but confusion sets in once again.

Any help please.

Here is most likely you got the ref. number from. it was in some of the links we checked out earlier for your Jacob.

MOORE Jacob, Private 954

Arrived in Melbourne on the transport ship Camperdown. Returned to England on the 24.3.1857 Hobart PRO3716

Maybe the ref. number is for the Australian source of info on him.?? just a thought.

Ah ha, what a dope I am.
But, the question still remains, how on earth do you find out info from TNA. I still get totally lost and confused, as you have already guessed.

Hi Gibbo,

Just heard back from the Sussex Regt. and as I thought, they do not hold any records of him in there archives.
But as he was a regular soldier, there maybe records at TNA.
He suggested that they may be under WO97, but are not searchable online. So I would have to go in person, or have someone search for me. The cost of that would be the prohibitive factor. So it's unlikely that I will find out anything more.:'(
It is also highly unlikely that his family went with him to Oz, so they were floating about for a few years somewhere. It is possible, that they were packed off to Suffolk/Norfolk to live with in-laws, as that seems the place where they died, Rebecca and William that is, leaving Jacob snr. and Jacob jnr living with new wife/stepmother in 1861.
Still waiting on a few more certs to confirm my suspicions.

I am so grateful that I've got this far, so I can't complain, as I was nowhere a few weeks ago.

Yes the cost, not cheap, especially if you have to pay for a researcher or travel. Something may turn up unexpectedly later on.

Heard on the radio that Kew Gardens have now Exactly 25% of the worlds plantlife in seeds stored away....2% are extremely rare and are being looked after for future generations should they become extinct in the wild.
