The child with no name is because of the was the register had been folde when it was filmed and the name cannot be seen. I think it was a girl - will get back to you on that. I'm off to check for Thomas and Harriott again. I only had a quick look last time and haven't yet checked alternatrive spellings.

Hi Dave ,

Was about to give you the Kilners in 1841 but Crankypants has beaten me to it. My site had them transcribed as Kilver.
I have checked the baptism image again for the child with no name and it was a daughter.

Cheers

Hello Emeltee,

Thank you very much. Yes, a female who died aged 9 or 11 on 8 Jul 1824 or 1826. A long time ago I found a site on the internet that had the headstone inscriptions and many of the KILNER were listed but there were many errors in the transcription. Sometimes the age was way out and sometimes the age seemed correct but the year was way out. The MI for this one was "Headstone 169: 8 Jul 1824 age 11"

I cannot find that free site any more. Perhaps it has changed host and become a subscription site?

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. I now have to make some additions to my tree. :)

I didn't know John H (= Hirst - his mother's name) had married. I also didn't know Thomas had married.

I can't find a marriage for either of them in IGI.

Mary Ruth married on 4 Jan 1842 in Adelaide, South Australia to a Matthew MOORHOUSE b. 1813 in Huddersfield. Now, I call that 'running away from home' :2fun:

Henry also ended up in Australia. Possibly on the 'Chaseley' in May 1849. He is the one I'm distantly related to.

Ellen died aged 15 weeks on 17 Sep 1824 according to that MI site I mentioned.

Also, for Harriott (nee HIRST) I have this: "Buried Independent Highfield Headstone 169: 28 Feb 1858 Died age 63." So that does not add up. I have this too:

Deaths Mar 1849
Kilner Harriet Huddersfield 22 275

So I'd say she died 28 Feb 1849. I have no death for spouse Thomas or for several of the children so further census listings may help narrow the search to a 10-year period and help make sense of the other MI that I have.

Thomas was baptised on 3 Mar 1783 at St Peter's Huddersfield - parents George & ?

Please see if you can find Thomas with some of the children in 1851.

Also John H & Sarah and Thomas & Ann.

Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

I'm not having much luck with IGI or FreeBMD finding the marriages or the births of the children:

I can't find a marriage for John Hirst & Sarah.

I can't find Frederick but it looks as though I have the next two:
Births Mar 1839
Kilner Emily Huddersfield 22 319

Births Sep 1840
Kilner Henry Huddersfield 22 317

--------------------------------
I have this possible match:

Marriages Jun 1840
KILNER Thomas Henry Huddersfield 22 189
WOODCOCK Ann Huddersfield 22 189 ?
+ 2x Hannah

and two possible children Batch: I020283
Emileen c. 31 Aug 1848 Kirkheaton, Yorkshire
Agnes c. 23 Dec 1849 Kirkheaton, Yorkshire

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

John Hirst KILNER in the 1851 census

Address - (can’t make out the street name) Huddersfield, Yorkshire

John Hirst KILNER b. abt 1808 age 43 Accountant Huddersfield, Yorkshire
Sarah KILNER b. abt 1808 age 43 Huddersfield, Yorkshire
Amelia KILNER b. abt 1839 age 12 Huddersfield, Yorkshire
Henry KILNER b. abt 1841 age 10 Huddersfield, Yorkshire
Thomas KILNER b. abt 1843 age 8 Huddersfield, Yorkshire
Alfred KILNER b. abt 1844 age 7 Huddersfield, Yorkshire
John Herbert KILNER b. abt 1846 age 5 Huddersfield, Yorkshire
George KILNER b. abt 1848 age 3 Huddersfield, Yorkshire

Haven't been able to find Thomas KILNER & Ann yet (will keep looking)

You mention their sister Mary Ruth & Henry coming out to Australia. Do you think perhaps Thomas & wife also made that journey after 1841.

Did you want the other census years 1861 onwards for John Hirst KILNER.

I will search tonight for any marriages of John & Thomas.

I have the South Australia BDM cd's so if you need any lookups I'll be happy to search.

Cheers

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. I have no information that Thomas & Ann went to Australia. I can't find a death in Qld. or NSW for either of them.

Yes please, for further census listings. I think John Hirst dies in 1879 in Huddersfield, but I don't know about Sarah.

I've had no luck finding anything new.

I have several in my tree with a South Australian connection so I may have some outstanding queries. I'll check.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much for those look ups. It looks as though Sarah died between 1861 and 1871. There are 7 possible ones in Huddersfield in FreeBMD. Rule out one if the age is correct and rule one in if the age is correct. The others have no age.

Is there a lodger with them in 1851 named Wiliam Brace?

Deaths Sep 1867
Kilner Sarah 59 Huddersfield 9a 216

Deaths Mar 1879
Kilner John Hirst 71 Huddersfield 9a 303

Dave

Hi Dave

Not sure if you have access to the GALE NEWSPAPER COLLECTION.

There is a marriage notice, it reads:-

The Leeds Mercury (Leeds, England), Saturday, April 25, 1835; Issue 3487. (1421 words)

Same day, at St. Paul's Church, Huddersfield, by the Rev. J. C. Franks, Mr. John Hirst Kilner, eldest son of Mr. Thomas Kilner, of Carr House, to Sarah, daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Dransfield, of Huddersfield.

At least now you have Sarah's maiden name& marriage date.

Thought I'd do a search on Carr House Huddersfield and found a death of daughter of Thomas Kilner.

The Leeds Mercury (Leeds, England), Saturday, July 18, 1840; Issue 5561. (2138 words)

Same day, at the parish church, Huddersfield, by the Rev. T. Manning, W. J. Clarke, Esq, Surgeon, to Eliza, daughter of Thomas Kilner, Esq, of Carr House, Huddersfield.

There is a very long article relating to a story called ELOPEMENT EXTRAORDINARY which mentions Mr Hall & Miss Brooks, also mentions Mr Kilner Carr House. Have you read this !!!!

Another site which you can access.
http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/search
relating to a partneship dissolved between Thomas KILNER & John Hirst KILNER

cheers

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. No, I've not see those articles nor knew of 'Carr House' and now I have many more questions.

As a general rule, I should do more searching of all old newspapers that are free to access.

If William BRACE is a brother then he has to be a brother of Sarah?? If he is a brother-in-law then how can he fit into that family?

Re the death of Eliza, I have no Eliza born to Thomas & Harriet and I can't find one in IGI. Curious.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

Have tried to find William BRACE in 1841 & 1861 etc but to no avail.

I went back to look at the 1851 census and looking at the surname the first letter looks like a "P", especially when you view the "B" in brother.
I did find three names "PRACE" born in Huddersfield, but still no luck with William.
The million dollar question is he a brother of Sarah or inlaw of John. who!!!!
According to the newspaper article Sarah's maiden name is DRANSFIELD.
Do you have anymore information on him, I thought perhaps being a Chemist there would be more clues to him.

Cheers

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking at the image. I actually have no other information apart from the 'brother' bit in the census. The newspaper article is no doubt correct with DANSFIELD. I will look using PRACE now.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. That's one more I didn't have. I can't find it in IGI. Looks like lots of the family were married and baptised in NC places most of which are not in IGI.
