William's birthdate is 19th July 1877 at Hasbury, Halesowen, Worcester.

I've been told he was a WILLIAMS at birth?

Something not right, is it?

Is this William's birth as a WILLIAMS?

Births Sep 1877
Williams William Charles Stourbridge 6c 165

That would make sense as 1871 Census before he was born:-
1871 Census - Schedule 12, Apperley, Deerhurst
George H Williams aka Henry KNOTT- head, married, 32, a cooper born Salop, Brignorth
Jane Williams - wife, 25, born Gloucestershire, Apperley
Sarah Jane Williams
- daug, 4, born same as mother
Henry - son 0, born same as mother

then by 1881 back to KNOTT.
1861 Census is missing and would be an interesting bonus.
1865 Henry KNOTT marries as George H WILLIAMS, Cooper to Jane PALMER - I have that certificate.

Yes, Stourbridge is the registration district that matches the place of birth as per census.

I asked about his marriage because I was expecting if there was one for him to be a WILLIAMS as per his birth reg. I can't see a baptism for him under any name.

It makes it even more confusing. Certainly, 1861 census would be a help.

I think it was when William KNOTT married or required his bc for work that he found out his birth name was WILLIAMS.
Then the story about his father changing his name because he didn't want to go to war came to light.
Williams father would still have been alive to ask questions directly, or tell the story, (died 1926) but whether it was true or not?

Thanks so much for all the research and time you have spent on helping sort this out.
You have found some interesting bits along the way

Think I need to absorb all this now. I'll have to see if I can find any other relatives that may know of the name change "story".

With much appreciation,
Sashar

You're welcome

Keep at it off and on and new bits might come to light. Some puzzles can be solved. :)

I may have found in the 1861 Census, John KNOTT b.1841, one of the missing KNOTT's. Just to recap:-
1841 Census - HO107/1195/4/16/25 Address: Bromsgrove Worcestershire
Henry KNOTT 20 - cooper - N
Mary 25 N - birthplace?
Henry 3 N - this is who I think later became George Henry Williams b.c1839
John 3 mo Y
Labright COX 50 - nail mr -Y
Emma COX 12 Y
1851 Census
HO107/1985 208 4
Stottesden, Shropshire Village
Henry Knott, head, 33, Cooper, b. Cleobury Mortimer
Mary Ann, wife, 30, b. Radnor Llandrinden?
Henry, son, 12, at home errand boy, b. Salop Ludlow - later known as GHWilliams
John, son, 9, scholar, b. Worcester Bromsgrove (I think)
Emma, dau, 6, scholar, b. Cleobury Mortimer
1855 - Marriage of Henry Mayne KNOTT to Martha DODD

1861 Bridgnorth census.

RG9/1849 1+ Enum. District 1. Folio 12B. Sch 103.
33 High Street, Bridgnorth.

Henry M KNOTT, Head, Mar, 40, Cooper, Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire.
Martha KNOTT, Wife, Mar, 30, Bewdley, Worcs.
In the same property as a REEDE or REESE family.

In the Bridgnorth Municipal cemetery is the burial of Martha KNOTT, age 44, wife of Henry. Buried 16 Sept 1866. Grave No. 1306 Unconsecrated ground.
SO WHERE WERE ALL THE CHILDREN IN 1861? Henry Jnr aka GHWilliams would be 22, John 19 and Emma 16.

Just found in 1861 Census on Family Search:-

1861 Census:-
John M Knott
Gender: Male
Age: 20
Relationship to Head of Household: Servant
Birthplace: Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire
Record Type: Household
Registration District: Presteigne
Sub-district: 3 Kington
Ecclesiastical Parish:
Civil Parish: Kington
County: Radnorshire

Radnorshire may have been the birthplace of John's mother Mary Ann KNOTT nee ROGERS.
From the 1861 Census info i've posted can anyone find the actual Census and see if John's sister Emma or brother Henry KNOTT may be there or even his mother Mary Ann KNOTT.

Thanks,
Sashar :)

Although I can't find Emma KNOTT other than a baptism in 1846 at Cleobury Mortimer, could this be her marriage in 1867? (Found on family search) Father was Henry Mayne KNOTT -

Can she be followed on any further census 1871 etc.
Should I post separately in 1871 Census section?

Answering my own question - partly?

Marriage: 8 Jul 1867 St Jude the Apostle, West Derby, Lancs.
William Holehouse - 28 Butcher Widower of Walker St
Emma Knott - 21 Spinster of Cecil St.
Groom's Father: John Holehouse, Horse Dealer
Bride's Father: Henry Mail Knott, Cooper
Witness: Edward Ratcliffe; Jane Jerry ?
Married by Banns by: John Turnbull
Register: Marriages 1865 - 1876, Page 62, Entry 124
Source: LDS Film 1545847

One of Emma's Uncle's married a Ratcliffe in Lancashire, interesting.
