Hello,

Deaths Jun 1843
HUNT Levitt Hedding Brighton 7 188

Spouse is Sarah but I have no death for her yet. Marriage in London in 1806.

I'd like a look up for them in 1841 please.

A son Joseph was born abt 1816 but I can't find a baptism. Joseph left England before 1841.

Regards,

Dave

Hello trace,

Thanks for looking. There may be more than one. The name is Levet/Levett in some records.

This is my man:

Levet Hedding HUNT c. 23 Sep 1782 Royal Hospital, Greenwich, Kent
Roger & Francis

Regards,

Dave

The Sydney Morning Herald - Monday 5 September 1870
The 3rd instant, at his late residence, Balmain, Mr. JOSEPH HUNT, son of the late Levitt Hedding Hunt, of Charles-street, Westminster, England, aged 54 years. English papers please copy.

That's where the b. 1816 comes from.

Perhaps that part of 1841 census in London is missing. I know some parts are.

A possibility, age and church works, Levitt was bur. there.

Q1 1857 Sarah Hunt, Brighton, [2b,109].

An Anc. Tree has Joseph Hedding Hunt [18] arriving 17 Oct 1834, Port Jackson, NSW (London via Hobart Town)

1841 NSW Census Index:
Joseph Hunt
Return No. 39
Residence: Balmain, Parish Petersham, County Cumberland, District Sydney

There are 2 others, but I notice his death was Balmain.

Hi Dave,
I have just found your post. I am a descendant of Levett Hedding Hunt's son Joseph who went to Australia.
Levitt Hedding Hunt was born 1782 and baptised in Greenwich, Kent. He died 18 June 1843, 41 Preston Street, Brighton. In the 1841 Census he is a teacher in a school north of London (well it would be in London now!).
I have a record of Joseph's marriage in Sydney, but cannot find his arrival details in Australia. Do you have information?
Thanks your help.
Alison

Hello Alison,

welcome to FHUK

Thank you for the details.

I was given this some time ago:

Joseph left England on the 'Ellen' via Hobart, arrived in Sydney 21 Oct 1834. Joseph Hunt and Henry Carter Perdriau became partners in a Ferry business on Sydney Harbour in 1853, Balmain Ferry Co.
and then found a notice in the newspaper.

The Sydney Herald (NSW : 1831 - 1842) - Monday 20 October 1834 p.2
From London, via Hobart Town, on Friday last, having sailed from the former place the 16th May, and the latter the 12th instant, the ship Ellen, Captain Dixon, with merchandise. Passengers—J. Furtado, Esq., Wm. Blackwell, Esq., Mr. W. Challinor ; E. W. Rudder, Esq., merchant ; Mr. Richard Pittman, Attorney ; Mr. Thos. Jessop, Surgeon ; and Messrs. G. Stokes, A. Palmer, Chas. Buchanan, James Newell, and Joseph Hunt.

It says 'on Friday last' so he arrived on 17th not 21st.

I can't find anything that adds enough to prove it's the right Joseph. There are three in the NSW 1841 census.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Dave
thank you for that info - thrilled to get the landing date and vessel. I knew about the business - excellent information in the local library in Balmain when I visited and the staff so helpful.
Now I am on the track of information on Roger Hunt, Levitt's father. I have a copy of his marriage contract but nothing much about him.
Anyway thank you for responding so promptly
Best
Alison

Hello Alison,

I've not searched for anything on Roger. The family is off the main lines of my tree and connected by the Perdriau family.

Regards,

Dave
