Hello,

Looking at George we have nothing that mentions LEAR. Pity they can't be found in 1841. Would be interesting if they were there as LEAR.

Age in the shipping record could be an error. Everything else points to a birth around 1815 and that is before the 1818 marriage. Also there is no matching baptism for George on 19 Mar 1826 at Holy Trinity Abbots Leigh.

No doubt about his parents from his death registration. The daughter's marriage to Stephen ANGEL and the mention in the funeral notice of his occupation matches that in the 1851 census.

I have only one question: How sure can we be that the baptism on 13 Aug 1815 at Hanham is the right one?

Spouse Elizabeth was baptised at Hanham as were her parents Daniel PEACOCK and Ann WILMOT. I have copies of the death certificates for Daniel and Ann.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Dave,
I have the 1826 baptism as taking place at Hanham, not Abbots Leigh:

Joseph, James and Elizabeth Lear – 19th March 1826 at Hanham Abbots
Children of Aaron & Ann of Grimsbury
Fathers Occupation – Carrier.
Source: Bristol and Avon FHS Bristol Dioceses Baptismal Register CD 1813-1837

I also noticed
James Lear, son of Aaron and Ann – Private Baptism, Oldland - 15th Jan 1821. Father Huckster, residence near Kingswood Hill.

Sarah Luton aged 1 year, daughter of Joseph and Mary - 25th July 1819 at Hanham Abbots . Father Carrier, residence Grimsbury.

I think that Grimsby on the 1815 baptism is a misspelling of Grimsbury.
A 1842 map of Bitton shows Grimsbury Farm and coal pit as being near Kingswood Hill and **** Road. Grimsbury looks like small area, so given that this family interchange the surnames LEAR and LEWTON, I would guess that Aaron and Ann Lewton on the 1815 baptism are the same people as Aaron and Ann Lear on the 1826 baptisms.

Hello Tcraig,

welcome You made it on to the site.

I fear this puzzle is too difficult and long for others to even consider looking at.

George Lewton - 13th August 1815 at Hanham Abbots
Son of Aaron & Ann of Grimsby Green
Fathers Occupation - Fish Hawker
Reg: 2a Page: 18 No: 114

I have not looked to see if I can find Grimsby Green.

Looking at the records of Hanham Abbots and Abbots Leigh I know even senior researchers confuse the two. However, I'm puzzled because the three baptisms I've listed for 19 Mar 1826 show as Holy Trinity on the new FamilySearch site. I find it hard to believe that they got the transcription so wrong. I can't see a corresponding set of three records on the site for Hanham.

So, do we simply say it's an error, 3x over?

I think there is no doubt that James and Joseph are brothers and the two who were baptised on 19 Mar 1826. It looks as though it would have been the first baptism for Joseph and possibly a second one for Elizabeth and James.

Do you accept George is an older brother despite the date of his baptism?

I feel as though I'm writing a novel. End of Ch 1. :2fun:

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,
I would go with George being from the same family as there was a lot of illegitimacy in the Kingswood area at this time. An alternative 1841 census record for James (any possibly George and Elizabeth too) is at Wamley Hill:
HODGES, George M 25 1816
HODGES, Elizabeth F 25 1816
HODGES, George M 6 1835
HODGES, Elizabeth F 3 1838
LEAR, Elizabeth F 20 1821 Shoemaker
NIPKIN, - M 25 1816
LEAR, James M 20 1821 Agricultural labourer

George HODGES could be a cousin or possibly George LEWTON.

Hello Tracey,

Thank you very much. What an interesting suggestion. I've not been able to find George, spouse Elizabeth or daughter Elizabeth born abt 1838 anywhere in 1841 as LUTON / LEWTON or LEAR. I had no idea they might have had a son George too. If you don't look at the HODGES it certainly fits. The clincher would be if it had George's occupation as coach builder. James would then have to change from being an agricultural labourer to cheesemonger.

HODGES, Elizabeth F 3 1838
LEAR, Elizabeth F 20 1821 Shoemaker
NIPKIN, - M 25 1816
LEAR, James M 20 1821 Agricultural labourer
That would mean the following is a different James LEAR.

1841
HO107 Piece 361 Book/Folio 10 Page 14

Sub District: Oldland
Civil Parish: Bitton
Address: Near Hanham, Bitton, Oldland Gloucestershire
LEAR, James M 20 1821 Gloucestershire occ Lab
LEAR, Ann F 20 1821 Gloucestershire
That would leave open this marriage for our James:

Marriages Dec 1840
HORWOOD Ann Keynsham 11 134
LEAR James Keynsham 11 134

I have the marriage cetrificate of James Lear to Ann HorWood on 28th Dec 1840 - It gives his father's name as Thomas (not Aaron) Do you have any idea why this is? - Let me know if this certificate is of any use to you and I could scan it in and send it to you.
I'd appreciate a copy. Thanks.

Re the father being listed as Thomas and not Aaron I think the answer is at the bottom of the next post. Prove that Martha's maiden name is HORWOOD.

Dave

So far I have not been able to prove Martha BEVAN is nee HORWOOD and sister of Ann. That would strengthen the case that we have the right Ann from 1851 onwards.

Hello Tracey,

Finding that marriage is a blow. For a minute there I thought you had found my GG grandmother, Elizabeth b. abt 1838.

I can't prove Martha's maiden name is HORWOOD, only that it seems to be HOWES.

There is a baptism record for a Martha HORWOOD with parents Thomas and Sarah but I can't find one for Ann.

I agree there is a problem in that the marriage certificate has Thomas and not Aaron as the father of James. I'm working on the information from the death certificate that says James married an Ann in Bristol. The 1871 census lists Ann as a deserted wife and that fits with James arriving in Victoria about 1863.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Dave,
Could the 1832 HODGES/WILMOT marriage be the marriage of your 3 x great grand parents? Many people in the family married using their mothers maiden name and WILMOT is the maiden name of Elizabeth PEACOCK(c1815).

Tracey

Hello,
A possible baptism for George Hodges c1835 is 15/10/1837 at Oldland
GEORGE son of GEORGE and ELIZABETH HODGES of CADBURY HEATH, fathers occupation:WHEELWRIGHT.

I've just checked this census record and the address is Warmley Hill

1851
Class H0107 Piece 1944 Folio 331 Page 4
CP Bitton
RD Keynsham
Sub RD Bitton
James Lear age 29 occ cheesemonger
Ann Lear age 25
Alice Lear age 5
Emily Lear age 2
All born Oldland

Which matches with the address of this record in 1841

HODGES, George M 25 1816
HODGES, Elizabeth F 25 1816
HODGES, George M 6 1835
HODGES, Elizabeth F 3 1838
LEAR, Elizabeth F 20 1821 Shoemaker
NIPKIN, - M 25 1816
LEAR, James M 20 1821 Agricultural labourer

I'm fairly certain that it's the same family.

Hello Tracey,

Thank you very much. How bizarre but how correct it would be. :D

William LEWTON married Ann LEAR on 8 August 1784 at Bitton. Son Aaron was baptised at Hanham on 24 April 1799 aged 15 years. Aaron married Ann HODGES as Aaron LEAR so he was using his mother's name suggesting he was actually born before his parents married. Hence the children called themselves LEAR when they were young and later in life reverted to LEWTON.

George was born about 1815 and his father Aaron LEAR married Ann HODGES on 9 May 1818. So George initially took the name HODGES. He married with that name and was listed in 1841 census with that name. He had changed to LEWTON by the 1851 census.

Elizabeth PEACOCK was born about 1815 and her parents Daniel PEACOCK and Ann WILMOT married on 10 Nov 1820. So Elizabeth took the name WILMOT.

When George married Elizabeth the marriage is HODGES + WILMOT. :D :D

George HODGES and Elizabeth WILMOT 6 Dec 1832 at Bitton.

Two generations on one side and one generation on the other. I'm not claiming any record. :2fun:

Regards,

Dave
