My great, great grandfather committed suicide in 1891 in Framfield, Sussex and for many years I have been trying to find his burial place without success. Ihave ben to Framfield a couple of times looking for him, scoured the church yard at St Thomas à Becket Church in the pouring rain and asked many people in the village where "Croxted Lane Yard" would have been. On a record from the now defunked Family History Online it states that he was buried there. I have also checked old maps and with SFHS but with no results. Can anyone find him?

Hi Keith

This looks like him date, age & place look to fit..

NBI:
8 Aug 1891
Jeremiah BATCHELOR
Aged 63
Framfield, St Thomas a Becket

The data supplier was the Sussex Family History Group and was checked.

This is a partial copy to show this...

Not sure, Keith.. I have rarely found any issues with the NBI, because their records are usually traceable.

2 things come to mind, when graveyards become full it is not unusual to move bodies and/or use another location. I'm not sure whether or not the suicide would impact on where exactly he was buried?

It may be worth contacting Sussex Family History Group as they are the data suppliers.

This is their website.

I thought that he may have been buried in un consecrated ground because of the suicide but I would have thought that some record of it's were about's would exist but no one in Framfield or Sussex Family History Group can throw alight on it. I suspect it was part of the church grave yard that was'nt consecrated.

Not sure what else to suggest, Keith..

I suppose it's a bit naive to ask if there is a burial plan of the graveyard?

That is probably likely...

That said, we know his details are recorded correctly, but doesn't help emotionally.

I don't think I will ever find him and the church there is most unhelpful. The irony of it all is that his son committed suicide as well in 1923 but I know where he is.

That one says Croxted Lane as well, it was'nt where he was living, that was Pale House Common.

He was buried at Farmfield were the inquest took place .Just like my Thomas Adamson 1840 Steyning,Sussex.20 July 1840 fell overboard from the Schooner "SAMUEL" at Shoreham Harbour. Buried Brighton Old Church Graveyard after inquest. He is the only Family member buried there ,the rest are in Selby,Yorkshire.I don't think they would have went to the expense of buying a plot even if they could afford to.
