is there any way anyone could look at a birth certificate directly for me? at the gro? rather than me ordering yet another wrong one?

Don't think you can just look at a certificate without ordering it. That would be a real good service. What name were you looking for & their parents & year? Have you checked the BMD indexes for Volume & page numbers?

If you know a bit more about the people you're searching for you can add checking points which the GRO will use to double check that the ref you've given them is the one you think it is. If you're not sure quite often the local registry offices will be more helpful if you give them a call.
