Hi Julie,
it gets stranger and stranger. The family bible we have says that John was born
October 9th 1848 at New Durham.

We were told by someone else that Thomas and Isabella of Tudhoe were his parents. Would you be able to check what family Thomas and Isabella had please? We could have been off track on this link it seems.
Thank you very much
Ros

Hi Julie,
we found a grave in Tudhoe cemetery recently. It says

Isabella Snowdon
Widow of Thomas Snowdon
Late of Tudhoe
Who died at Craghead
March 5th 1906

We think that Thomas may have been married twice and Isabella also.
??!!!???? Perhaps he married his stepdaughter aaaaaaagghhh!!!!!!

Even though Isabella's surname is Stephenson on the census, someone has added Snowdon as her surname on Ancestry's transcription.

Have got some more census info will post sometime tomorrow off to bed now.

Hi Julie,
Thanks for all your help, can I impose on you again and ask you to check a particular name for me please?
Going back to the Mortons, in the 1851 census John and Elizabeth and their family were living at Carrville Durham. The eldest child was called William. By the time of the census in 1871 William was not with them and I know that James had emigrated to the US by then. Can you do a look up on William please and see if you can locate him? Either in Tudhoe or elsewhere. Sorry I can't give you his birth year but it must have been pre 1832 (that was James date) but I know he was the eldest. He may have moved to another part of the country. Could you particularly look at the Derbyshire region, he may married and had a child called Henry around 1853. This is a long shot - I will explain more if aything comes up.
Thank you for yor kindness and interest in our search
Regards
Rosaleen

Hi,

This could be him and family 1871 civil parish Middleton county Durham reg dist Teesdale-address Townsend

William Morton head age 41 born Middleton Durham occ lead miner (if he is the same has Hetton on 1851 census)
Sarah Morton wife age 41 born Yorkshire Middleton?
John Morton son age 19 born Middleton Durham
William Kidd step son age 19 born Yorkshire Mickleton
Jonathon Morton son age 17 born Middleton Durham
Thomas Kidd step son age 15 born Yorkshire Mickleton
Jooseph Morton son age 11 born Middleton Durham
Henry Morton son age 9 born Middleton
Jabes Morton (transcribed by Ancestry could be James the b looks like a b)
son age 7 born Middleton
Jane Ann dau age 5 born Middleton
Robert Morton son age 2 born Middleton
Mary Kidd mother in law age 76 born Alston Cumberland

Thomas Kidd has been transcribed as Morton on Ancestry

Theres someone else looking at this family again there is a correction, as Ancestry had transcribed some of the names as Monton.

Not to sure of the Kidds place of birth will check on 1861

Havnt forgotten the other census.

The above may not be your William. Have him and Sarah on the 1861 census, but this William Morton appears.

civil parish Shincliffe county Durham address 5 Collery? Houses

William Morton head age 31 occ coal miner born Stretton
John Morton son age 9 born Stretton
Mary Ann Morton wife age 29 born Rainton Durham
Henry Morton son age 3 born Shincliffe

This family are not coming up on the 1871 census. Will have another look.

1881 census civil parish Cockfield-address 35, Burnt House

Isabella Snowdon age 52 born Burnmoor
Thomas Snowdon age 60 born Northumberland Cawlden?
Catherine Snowdon age 18 born Shincliffe
Cuthbert Snowdon age 15 born Shincliffe occ coal miner

1871 census civil parish Tudhoe

Alice Snowdon age 16 born Shincliffe
Catherine Snowdon age 8 born Shincliffe
Cuthbert Snowdon age 5 born Shincliffe
Isabella Snowdon age 43 born Durham-------
John Snowdon age 22 born New Durham occ miner

Hi Julie, have printed all this out and I'm going to look at it carefully.

It certainly doesn't help when all the names are very similar does it? Will post again if it becomes clearer. Many thanks for all your hard work. Will keep checking posts.

Ros.

Hi Julie, haven't got to the bottom of this yet - but some of these names are looking as if they follow a pattern - definitely 2 families going on from the same father I think. Still figuring it out but I'm really grateful that you're still looking. Can I ask for your help again? I wonder if you can try to find someone else for me. Its a difficult one however.
My husbands great grandfather (mothers side of family) was called Richard Dawson, we believe he was born Brasside Durham (this was sometimes called Waterside). By the time he was 11 he was an orphan and was taken in by a family called Liddle who were living at Sherburn Hill (we think). He was working down the mines by the time he was 12. At a rough estimate we think he must have been born about 1880/81. He married a Margaret Carr - no date for that and lived out his life in Sherburn Hill. No idea at all who his parents were. He lived to be about 85/6.
Hope you don't mind me asking. Seems to have been quite a sad story until he was taken in by the Liddles. My husband remembers him with great fondness but was too young to know him really.
Thank you.

Hi Julie, thanks once again. It could possibly be the right marriage, they had 4 children in this marriage. The eldest was Andrew, born abt. 1900, Gertrude (my husbands gmother) born 1902 and Joseph 1909. There was another girl Elizabeth born in between somewhere but she died. With your help this has given me a starting point to work on. Thank you for all your help.

The person we are looking for is a Charles Faulkner born 1905 died 1926 in the Manchester area. He is not to sure of the dates. His father was charles faulkner who married Margaret ann Vernon in 1904. They werre both born around 1884 in Lancs. So far I am unable to find anything. If you can help I would be most grateful. I found a few births on Free BMD through Ancestry.co.uk (I am a member) There were alot between 1903 and 1908. These records are from FreeBMD so if you search there you can get free access to year and qtr of birth plus a folio number to order certificates. I also tried freereg and IGI and UKBMD with no luck - too many or not born Manchester. As Manchester is so big, it will help if you have a district.
I checked 1911 census and found following record - only one found in Lancs except one other Charles Faulkner born in 1889 was in military but didn't give place of birth.
(RG14PN23607 RG78PN1375 RD463 SD2 ED24 SN9)
Address 728 LIVERPOOL ROAD PATRICROFT County Lancashire
District Barton upon Irwell Subdistrict Barton
Enumeration District 24 Parish Eccles
FAULKNER, CHARLES HEAD MARRIED 1 M 26 ACCOUNTANT CLERK Born -NORTHAMPTONSHIRE SUTTON BASSETT.

This is pay per view and costs 7 pounds for 60 credits. Each record search costs 10 credits to look and 30 to view original image so I can't tell you if this is the right one as I didn't use 30 credits to view original image- you will need to buy credits and look at original for the rest of the household. Hope this helps
