Look up please - George Henry Lawrance

Location
Toronto
From
Canada
Can I get a look up please?

George Henry Lawrance b Nov 1877, London
parents William (Henry) Lawrance and Ellen Quinton - no info on siblings if any

I have a Birth registration that seems to fit:
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1878
Registration district: Mile End Old Town
Inferred County: London

Marriage in Canada 1907 to Florence Irwin

An overseas death notice in Canada that suggests he emigrated in 1904.

Can't find him on any census in England, (nor in Canada in 1911)

Thanks!

Hello,

I'll start with the bit that can be found:

Marriages Mar 1874
Lawrence William Henry Lewisham 1d 921
QUINTON Ellen Lewisham 1d 921

I can find a George in 1881 with parents William & Ellen but he is not the right one. He is the one born Marylebone.

I'm wondering if they left England before 1881.

Regards,

Dave

Lovely! That's one I didn't have!

I have a postcard addressed to George but can't make out the date ( possibly '07?). It's unsigned although I've been told it was possibly from a brother. Postmark is Hornsey N .

It's definitely a puzzle!

I finally found him on the 1911 Canadian census - Year of birth is off by one but everything else matches up- the 'K' is definitely an H on the original

Name: George K Lawrance
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married
Age: 35
Birth Date: Nov 1876
Birthplace: England
Relation to Head of House: Lodger
Immigration Year: 1904

I have his wife and kids with her parents in Bobcaygeon.

So if he came to Canada in 1904 he should be in the 1901 UK census.

So I checked with family members and it seems like George had a brother William and two step (or half? ) sisters Ethel and Florence. It's a possibility that his father died and his mother remarried

This could possibly be William

Thanks so much dave! Would you mind walking me through what you searched for to come up with this result? I tried searching by various family members, using multiple combinations(on ancestry) and came up dry.

Wow, where do I start....

I had searched Lawrance every which way without luck. I then looked for families which had the names Ellen, Ethel, Florence and George. Luckily I was on 1891 census. Whilst trolling through the reults there was Thomas Smith with wife Ellen, two daughters Ethel and Flo, and William and Jess Lawrance both born Mile End. Mile End kind of stuck out so I had a look at the image and read Jess as George.
Bingo. Now I knew Ellens birthplace so the rest was simple

sounds easy, but

Well I appreciate your efforts! I was curious if you had access to a better search engine than the ancestry version because I tried to search using wildcards and it couldn't cope. I guess it's just a case of a fresh set of eyes and I'm very grateful!

How'd you like to have a go at finding William on the 1901/ 1911 census?;) I'm going to assume he was the author of the previously mentioned postcard from Hornsey, possibly in 1907

this may be him. Mile End is not far from the Isle of Dogs and his son is called George. H's had a change of occupation though

Okay amazing people, I have a bunch of random info that may or may not help sort this family out. I'm going to separate it into two parts so as not to confuse things.

Part one- Descendants of William James Lawrance b 1875

I don't believe that this is my William

William Lawrance 27 Isle of Dogs, Boiler maker
Minnie Lawrance 26 Canning Town
George Lawrance 1 Plaistow

married Minnie Golding, Dec qtr 1897 West Ham

dave
I retrieved the following info from family members/ notes in a bible.
I don't have a name for his wife nor when he married but he had at least 5 children

William- lived in Liverpoole
Gordon (was a police officer)
Joan - resided Ascot House, Ipswich at last known - married name unknown
Margaret (called Peggy)
Jean

I think this might be them:
Name: William Jas Lawrance
Age in 1911: 35
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1876
Relation to Head: Head
Gender: Male
Birth Place: Mile End Old Town
Civil parish: Eltham
County/Island: London
Country: England
Street Address: 39 Deansfield Road, Eltham, Kent S E
Marital Status: Married
Years Married: 2
Estimated Marriage Year: 1909
Occupation: METROPOLITAN POLICE CONSTABLE
Registration district: Lewisham
Registration District Number: 29
Sub-registration district: Eltham
William Ja's Lawrance 35
Harriet Emily Ruth Lawrance 29
William Thomas Henry Lawrance 8 mos

Gertrude Brooks

It makes sense to me that he would name his son after both his own father and the man who raised him (Thomas Smith)

I can find a death for William Thomas Henry Lawrance in Liverpoole which gives a birth date of 1 Aug 1910. Haven't found a corresponding birth tho.

this looks like the marriage

Name: Harriet Emily Ruth Brooks
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1881
Age: 27
Spouse Name: William James Lawrence
Spouse Age: 32
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 6 Oct 1908
Parish: Hornsey Rise
Borough: Islington
Father Name: Thomas Brooks
Spouse Father Name: William Henry Lawrence
Register Type: Parish Register

Hornsey matches the post card that started this thread!
