LOOK UP Please. Richard CLARKE, b. c 1832 in or near Cambridge, Stroud, Gloucestershire UK

Parents John CLARKE and Eliza(beth) HANCOCK Clarke.

I'm not having much luck finding my GGF Richard CLARKE in or around Cambridge in Cambridgeshire.

I do have a short entry written by him in ~1888 that said "born Cambridge, educated there, worked on the railways", so I am also taking a long shot that he meant Cambridge as in HAMbridge instead of Cambridge as in FAMEbridge. :D I see that there was a railway in the general vicinity ( I presume in that era).

When he sailed for Australia November 1856 he reported his mother 'dead', and father's whereabouts 'unknown'.

Is there a Gloucestershire expert here in this Forum/Site who might have some information around that village, and any information about BMD?

Thanks, Colin

Hi Colin,

Had a look on the 1841 census the only Richard Clark born abt 1831 where born Gloucestershire, is an orphan in the Boys Orphan House, Civil parish St Paul, reg district Bristol. In 1851 there is this Richard born abt 1831 Bristol, civil parish Wrington, county of Somerset, occ apprentice dosnt say of what of. They could be the same person.

Thank you Julie.

I'm still intrigued by the North Witchford Workhouse Richard and Eliza and will concentrate there for a while, however, there are possibilities in the 'other' Cambridge GLS.

For example, Eliza Handcock Q/Gc5/6 13th Jul 1840 and Elizabeth Hancock Q/Gc6/3 5th Aug 1856 are in Gloucester Goal Registers (info. from GLS Archives). Although I presume "my" Eliza is shown 'somewhere' as Eliza CLARKE not Hancock, one never knows.

In the Moreton-on-Marsh area, there is an Eliza Hancock living in a Clarke household in 1841. There are Clarke children living in a Hancock household in 1841 (not a Richard) and they are named as Hancock surname in 1851.

Because Richard and Eliza are so elusive, I have to assume that anything is possible.

Cheers,

Colin
