Hi

My Great Aunt Annie Janet Watt was born in Croydon, Surrey, England 19th March 1889, she emigrated to US and arrived in New York on the 27th August 1912.
She married Burton Samuel Thompson in Welland, Ontario, Canada on the 24th June 1916 (2nd wife), the went on to have 6 possibly 7 children:

Eleanore V born abt 1913 (daughter of Burton and possible daughter or sept daughter to Annie Janet as born prior to marriage)
Nellie born abt 1918
Virginia J born abt 1920
Robert N born abt 1925
Kenneth L born abt 1926
Burton S born abt 1930
Thelma F born abt 1930

I have found them in the 1920 census living in Rochester Ward 22, Monroe, New York and in the 1930 census living in Brighton, Monroe, New York. So far I have been unable to find them in the 1940's census but have found them in the US City Directory's for 1943 and 1944 living in Rochester, New York.

Annie died in Springwater, Livingston, New York in January 1977 aged 87 years.

Would any one be able to help me in locating them in the 1940's census or if any one is researching the people listed above it would be great to hear from you.

Many Thanks

Marie

I have looked a bit at the 1940 census, haven't had any luck so far either!

I did look at the marriage license itself; they were actually married in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada in Christ Church. Annie Watt was resident there (for at least 15 days) when they were married, while Burton was a resident of Rochester New York, USA. Rochester NY is not far from Niagara Falls, Ontario.

According to Wikipedia, Welland is a 'historic' county and is now called the Regional Municipality of Niagara.

It looks like Annie was living in Canada when they were married, is it possible that she had family there, and that they might have gone to live there for a few years between 1930 and 1943 before returning to the USA? Their two witnesses were also residents of Niagara Falls, Ontario. Friends of the family? It might be worthwhile to look into Canadian genealogy websites.

I looked at the marriage record again, and Burton Samuel Thompson's mother is also an Annie Thompson. Canadian electoral rolls in 1940 list a Mrs. Annie Thompson (widow) in Welland, Ontario. If his father died around then it's possible that he and his family went to stay with his mother for awhile.

Hi Lirio100

Thank you for your help, I will have a look at this, I know Burton's parents lived in New York for a time as Burton was born in New York but will see if I can find them on any of the Canadian census returns and electoral rolls prior to 1940. If his father did die then he would have probably gone home.

Annie didn't have any family in Canada, she emigrated with the family she worked for in 1912.

I will have a look at the canadian genealogy sites and see what I can find.

Again Thank you for you help.

Marie

Hello Marie. I'm a great granddaughter of Annie. Virginia was my grandmother. I live in NY and remember my great grandmother. If you need any other information, I may be able to help.

Hi Shellyk48

Thank you for your message, I would love to hear all about her, I have the basic information from census records except the 1940"s, birth and death records and some telephone directory entries, I do have a photo of her that one of her other great-granddaughters sent me but thats about all, so any thing that you can tell me about her and the rest of the family would be great, I look forward to hearing from you.
