I have found quite a few Curries but can't seem to figure out which one is correct. My grandfather John W. CURRIE was born in New Jersey. His father, John Currie was born in Philadelphia and lists his father John as being born in Scotland and his mother Louisa as being born in Ireland.

My grandfather was an orphan at an early age and knew nothing about the family.

Yes, I understand. I have been looking in Philadelphia. I do know of a relative, a Nicholas Currie who's father was George Boyed Currie that lived in New Jersey. I have been trying to find out who George Boyed's father was because possibly he was a brother to John.

I really appreciate your advice and guidance. I've been looking for over two years. I just contacted the State of New Jersey to see if they can send me copies of my great grandfather's and great grandmother's death certificates. Possibly there will be information there...like names of father and mother. If you have access to Ancestry.com and are curious, my tree is public - bs796 (Scates Currie Johnson family tree)

Would the marriage certificate for John and Louisa say if he was a widower or not. Trying to work out if the one you have in 1860 and 1870 is the same John Currie. Also not sure the one who became a citizen in 1868 is the same one as it says he lived in New Jersey for at least a year and he was still in Philadelphia at that time. That one was born near Dumfries. If he is the same one you have all those children born Scotland which must give a clue and if you try and find what happened to them there may be another clue somewhere. Or was he married 3 times to his first wife in Scotland, then Mary Ann then Louisa?

Would you believe I am working on it right now. I found a John Currie who was the father of George B Currie born in 1815, who has a wife Mary Ann. I see if I can find answers to what you asked.

Wow, thanks. Four eyes are better than one.

There is a very likely John born at Kirkmichael, Dumfriesshire to James Corrie and Agnes Pringle in 1819. Kirkmichael is around 6 miles from Kirkton. As John's first son was James and his second girl Agnes then this works with the naming patterns. But only if the John in the 1860 and 1870 census in Philadelphia is the same John as the one marrying Louisa in 1872 in Philadelphia and the one who was naturalised in 1868 with a Mary Curry as his witness and a birthplace of Kirkton. We need to find proof though. Can you find a death between 1870 and 1872 for Mary Curry so he is free to marry Louisa. Somehow you need to find out who Jeanette's mother is as she was born Philadelphia around 1854 and also Mary born 1856 and George Boyd. Do deaths in America give the parents? If you can get a whiff of the mother I may be able to find a marriage in Scotland for John and Mary? You have James P Currie (which could be Pringle?) died in Winslow which does tie the two Johns up a bit as James must have moved with his father to Winslow. Where is James P in the census?
Sorry more questions than answers here!

I have just found a John Curry born 1820 and James Curry born 1851 in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1880 - both born Scotland and both pattern makers so think this is the John from Kirmichael and not the one who married Louisa who is in New Jersey in 1880 He can't be in two places in the 1880 census. And the ever-changing occupation was bothering me. Sorry but your John must be a different one. Back to square one. Think you need that marriage to Louisa.

You have been wonderful!!! Question away. I have to go over and take care of my mother for the next 3 hours, she has dementia, but will jump right on it when I get home.

Thanks the being so proactive in helping me. So many Curries, Currys.... makes me nuts and hard to figure out right person.
