Looking for information on my Grandfather John Beardsmore

Hi, I am looking for any information on my Grandfather John Beardsmore. He married my Grandmother May Withers in 1920 in the Birmingham area and they had 5 children, Margaret, Geoff, Arthur, John and Mary. My grandmother May died in 1930 and he re-married a woman called Ruby Andrews and they had five children, Peter, Alan, Gwen, Gay and Joy (twins). He died around 1963. I believe he had two sisters. He worked as a piano tuner and was blind in one eye.

I would like to know when and where he was born, his parents, brothers, sisters etc. and any other relevant information.

I had loads of feedback yesterday to my first post 'looking for my Grandmother May Withers' and have been able to start filling in my family tree with all the information I received, so am hoping I can do the same for my Grandad.

Thank you

Su

Hi Su.

Do you have his fathers name, as there are a few possibilities.

What is his fathers name on the marriage cert, and does it give his age.

Do you have his death cert, which may give his date of birth, or at least his correct age.

Hi Steve,

No sorry I don't have any details apart from the bit of info I've posted. My Mum is 84 and she doesn't know anything as her Mum died when she was three and her Dad re-married.

I think you may need to purchase a marriage cert, for starters. That should give his age and fathers name and occupation.

Hopefully we can start from there.

As the ages for those I've found are so close, we need some more details. That's if, they are the right ones.

If you apply here: https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Using these details, it all should be revealed when you receive it. Register first, and you'll need a credit.debit card. £9.25, including postage.

Hello Su,

On Anc* there is a family tree showing John Beardsmore who married May Withers.

John’s father is listed as “Beardsmore” (no first name) and no spouse. Mr Beardsmore’s children are listed as Clara, Clarise, Marion and John. The tree owner says he died in 1939, so I had a look on FreeBMD and found a Samuel Beardsmore dying at the age of 77, in Rowley Regis, Staffordshire in the June quarter of 1939. However, the Samuel Beardsmore, who is the right age that I found in 1901, does not have children called Clara, Marion, Clarise and John!

There is a birth of Clara Beardsmore registered in King’s Norton in 1895, but as yet, I haven’t found her in 1901!

The tree shows Marion Beardsley marrying John Bailey, and of course your Gran and Grandad!

Hope this gets you a little further on!

:) Josie

Hi Josie
If you have 1911, have a look at this record
RG14PN17939 RG78PN1093 RD383 SD3 ED29 SN262

there are a few names which tie in with what you found,

Henry Horatio married Clara Wright Sep qtr 1887 Birmingham. I wonder if one of the two children missing is called Clara after her mother.

EDIT Su, As Steve suggests, there could be several possible John's, so some other info is required to support this theory. Does your gran know the names of John's sisters?

Great finds Dave! :) I suppose if young Clara was alive in 1891, then she could be married or working away by 1911!

Using the (free) census ref search on FMP, I've got the names of the Beardsmores but not the ages! Could you please tell me Clarice's age and I'll see if I can find her? Thanks!

:) Josie

Oh wow! You lot are so clever! I spoke to my Mum last night and she told me that her father John Beardsmore had three sisters, Clara, Clarice and Marion. Marion had two children out of wedlock called Monica and Tony. That's all she can remember. Don't know why she's never told me before, it must be her age, she is 84!

Hi Dave,

You're brilliant. Yes I got your private message and have sent a reply but I don't know if it went through! I'm still learning how to navigate this site!

Thanks again

Hi Su

These are the census ref nos for Albert, he married Margaret Nelson J/S1865 West Bromwich
1881 - RG11-3039-87-18
1871 - RG10-3127-6-6
1861 -
1851 - HO107-2058-367-41
1841 - HO107-1141-9-25

Albert's parents were William 1791 and Ann 1806. I think Ann had been married before, her married name being Herd, and possibly marrying William 1831/1838

If you cannot get the census images up from the refs, let me know. If you haven't got access to Ancestry, and would like to contact the owner of the tree, send me your email address by PM and I'll send it them so they can contact you.

Hi Dave,

Sorry but you've lost me! Who is Albert? he hasn't been mentioned before! I'm totally lost now. I can't access the census as I am not subscribed so have to rely on the limited free info I can access.

Hello Su,
I think I can answer most of your questions as I am your uncle, and John Beardsmore was my dad. Tell me what you want to know. PS, I haven't seen your mom for years since we called on her once,
Regards,
Peter Beardsmore
