Hello everyone.
I have been tracing my ggg grand parents (John & Sarah Fletcher) in Tasmania and appear to have lost track of them after the 1860s.
They originally came to Tasmania aboard the Christiana on 22/11/1822, after marrying in New Brentford, Middlesex on 14/6/1822.
John became a District Police Constable in Hobart and then in Ross, Tasmania.
John & Sarah had a son Arthur Fletcher in Ross in 1844 (my gg grandfather).
Although I have not been able to find any passenger lists for John & Sarah Fletcher returning to England, I have decided to start my research in the UK after I could not find any local facts after the 1860’s (there are quite a few “Land” documents in the 60’s, however I cannot prove they relate to my John Fletcher).
I then found a headstone in the Municipal Cemetery in Twickenham, Middlesex with 3 inscriptions:
John Fletcher 11/03/1879 Aged 80 (born 1799)
Sarah Fletcher 18/02/1894 Aged 93 (born 1801)
Emily Smith 27/10/1873 (born 1788)
John Fletcher was the Sole Executor for Emily Smith’s probate hence using her grave for his own burial (& then later Sarah’s)???

Given John died in 1879, I assume Sarah became head of the household and was able to be listed in the Electoral Register?

1879 John Fletcher Will Ancestry.com.au - England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1995
Lists Eliza Isabella Jones (wife of John’s Executor William Jones) as the niece of John Fletcher.
Note Eliza Jones is listed as living with Sarah Fletcher as a servant in the 1881 Census
She was born in Brushford, Devon in 1829
Sarah died in 1894 and I assume arranged for her burial within Emily & John’s grave (possibly by William Jones)
1894 Sarah Fletcher Probate England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1995 - Ancestry.com.au
So my assumptions are that John & Sarah travelled back to England in the early 1860s and lived at 1 Trafalgar Square, Twickenham until their respective deaths in 1879 & 1894.
They left their estate to their niece Eliza Isabella Jones and her husband William Jones, both of whom are later buried in the adjoining grave to where John, Sarah & Emily are buried.
If I am correct, I would love to understand the relationships between my John & Sarah and their "grave partners" Emily Smith and Eliza Jones.
Kind regards,
David Fletcher
