Hi. I am a new member and need help in trying to find out what happend to my grandmother, I have been able to trace her up until her marriage in 1914 to Frederick Severn and birth of children, Bertha 1915 and Douglas 1917 after that I have hit a brick wall.

Mary Hannah Eason born c1891 in Riddings, Derbyshire.
Gave birth to William Eason in 1911 (father unknown) Nottingham I think
Married Frederick Severn on 4/1914 in Mansfield Nottingham
Daughter (my mother) born 26/8/1915 in Basford Nottingham
Son (uncle) Douglas Herbert Severn in 1917

Since 1917 haven't been able to find any records of her whereabouts, my mother Bertha maintains she died when she was 11 years old (can't find any record).

I do know that her then husband Frederick Severn came to Australia in 1921/22 and she did not come with him or join him later so can only assume they seperated or she may have passed away.

Can anyone advise where I might look from here. Being in Australia makes it difficult.

Thanks Cathy

Thanks Gortonboy

This is the closest record I have seen. I will check out details and try to order the certificate.
It has been a frustrating search, my mother maintained that her mother died in childbirth when she was 11 years old (c1925), I am learning not to put too much faith in what family say. Hoping that this is Mary Hannah's records.
Thank you so much.

Just been having a look on findmypast passenger lists to see if Frederick gave an address when he came to Australia, as that might be useful.

There is an F Severn, Miner, address 29 Padley Hill, Mansfield, travelling on the Ormonde, London to Australia (Brisbane) 16th April 1921 - but he is only 25 years old.

On the 31st March 1922 on the Orsova, London to Australia (Brisbane) there is a Mr F W Severn, aged 55, Miner, same address of 29 Padley Hill, Mansfield.

Hi Gedcom

The information you have given re Frederick Severn looks as though it is my grandfather, the younger Frederick I believe to be his son by a previous marriage. The address may be helpful as I was able to locate their whereabout from 1911 Census and showed him as a widower at a different address, he did not marry Mary Hannah until 1914 so the address may be useful.

Is there any other way of checking on who was living at the address given by Frederick?

The death of Mary in 1971 doesn't seem to tally with what family have said, they maintained she died in childbirth, having left Frederick for another man, but as I have learnt you can't trust family rumours. So this is the best records I have received so I think best idea is to obtain death certificate to either prove or eliminate details.

Many thanks

Hi,

I agree you still need to purchase the death certificate.

I wondered if you could get an electoral roll look up for that address for the ensuing years. I am not in that area or I would go and look for you.

Cathy....sometimes getting in touch with a local paper is the easiest and quickest way of getting info....when i traced my parents it was through the local press...there must be people in the Mansfield area with info...the above link will give you a contact at the paper,my feeling is you must have family or distant relatives in this area...of course its up to you....good luck ..Lee.

Hi

Thanks for the information I am going to purchase Mary Hannah's 1971 death certificate, this will either be her or eliminate this record.

I will check out the address given for Frederick Severn, it may hopefully give some information.
Hadn't thought about the Electoral Roll or the local newspapers will investigate these options.

Will advise if I strick lucky - once again thanks - I didn't think this was going to be so hard.

Regards Cathy
