Would you know his occupation at all. Any other clues would help to narrow down the search.
As you know, SMITH is not the easiest name to research.

I have two possible hits in the last online available census.

1). His father Charles John Smith is a Licensed Vitualler in Shoreditch. Charles Smith is down as born London.

2). His father, Arthur A.Smith is a Railway Clerk, and this Charles Smith is down as being born Hackney.

my 2nd choice - 1901
SMITH, Charles Head Married M 27 1874 Cab Driver Stepney London
SMITH, Mary Wife Married F 25 1876 Bow London
SMITH, John Son Single M 7 1894 Hackney London
SMITH, Charles Son Single M 5 1896 Hackney London
SMITH, Alfred Son Single M 2 1899 HackneyLondon

Piece:284 Folio:44 Page:80
Registration District: Bethnal Green

Civil Parish: Bethnal Green
Address: 5, The Oval, Bethnal Green London

that makes four possibilities, so further clues are needed.

I take it that there is nothing in his service record or in the marriage certificate or in the birth certificates of children or his death that indicates Charles had a middle name.

It's possible he had one but chose never to use it.

Do you have his death certificate?

Was his death reported in a newspaper?

Was his death the subject of an inquest?

Do age at marriage and age at death agree with a birth in 1895?

Has Charles been found in 1911 census?

Deaths in Middlesex and London for March quarter. Only one seems to fit if his death was registered.

Deaths Mar 1927
Smith Charles 47 Pancras 1b 90
Smith Charles 79 Paddington 1a 27
Smith Charles 31 Wandsworth 1d 506
Smith Charles 48 Greenwich 1d 1290
Smith Charles A 26 Edmonton 3a 726
Smith Charles E 33 St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a 720
Smith Charles H 56 Lambeth 1d 457
Smith Charles K 68 Pancras 1b 131
Smith Charles R 60 Stepney 1c 414
Smith Charles W A 43 Wandsworth 1d 944
