Hi, I have been looking for my great grandfather William Cooke who was a coal miner and I think was born in Co. Durham. There are a number of men called William Cooke born around this time and in this area and I am getting very confused.
The only certain information I have of him is on his son's marriage certificate which shows: William Cooke (who was born in 1863 in Catchgate) m Elizabeth Ann Rosemergey on 28/06/1884 in a register office in the District of Lanchester. It says that William (the son) was living in Hamsterley, Medomsley and was a coal miner. I have tried looking for William junior's birth record to find his mother's maiden name but haven't been able to find it.
I am really hopeful that someone will be able to help. Thanks,

A possible.
William Cooke B sep q 1862 Hexham mmn Colvoin (I think it should be Colvin)
There is a marriage for a William Cooke to a Sarah Colvin 15 Aug 1846 in Gateshead, Durham
Thank you for your reply. I saw this one but it means he was only 4 when he married as I think he was born in 1842 though I could be wrong about that.

Yes this sounds like my great grandfather. Thank you! :) I am surprised that he was born in Prudhoe, Northumberland. I am looking for his parents, but his father in particular. I thought that if I could this William's mother's maiden name it would make it easier to find the right William Cooke. I have Sarah to work with now - and Prudhoe!

If this is correct then William Snr was born c1817 not 1842.

Not sure what 'he was only four when he married' refers to who?
If the William Cook in 1881 then the father on that record was born 1817 and married in 1846.
I agree, I ruled out Sarah Colvin because of the 1842 birth date but now it fits.

Name: William CookeGender: MaleMarriage Date: 15 Aug 1846Marriage Place: Gateshead,Durham,EnglandSpouse: Sarah Colvin

Thank you for taking the time to help me with this.
The different dates are confusing me now. If William senior was born in 1817 why does the 1851 census say that he was born in 1824? If he was born in 1824 he would be 27 and not 24.
Are these just registration mistakes?

The problem with birth dates on census is that you nrver know who answered the questions.
They may be quessed ages as are birth locations.
I know that the 1841 census rounded ages down to 10 or 5(ie 50,60 or 45,55)
Really its all about the other info to help you to make your mind up.
