I am a newbie at this - I have been trying to use 1911 census free search for my father's parents who lived in Bathgate Scotland at this time, I'm pretty sure his name was William Lowe, I don't know my grans name  so can anyone tell me anything about them. Mr gran was a lady-chauffeur.

Re: Looking for grandad

The 1911 scottish census, is pay per view, via this site. Here.

That is possibly why you haven't had a reply. A year and place of birth may help, and any other information you may have, so we can help.

Was your Grandfathers name William Lowe, or Gt.Grandfathers name.? What was your Grandmothers name, was she Scottish of English.

I'm pretty sure the Scottish 1911 census, is not available on Ancestry.

1911 census is free until end of week at ancestry.co.uk but it doesn't include Scottish returns, although there are several entries for william Lowe born in Scotland, but living in England or Wales.

Re: Looking for grandad

as you have found out Scottish records are hard to come by.

by a system of inputting one letter at a time I have found that there is a William Lowe in Bathgate aged 10 on the 1911 census

There is a William Lowe born in Bathgate in 1896

There is also a William Lowe married in Bathgate in 1922 to Mary Norr

Also two births in Bathgate
1923 female Hutton Lowe (seems an unusual name, possibly a name handed down EDIT further searching indicates the name could be Mary Hutton Lowe
1926 male David Lowe

anything ring a bell? You would need to purchase credits to find more detail

Re: Looking for grandad

Thanks for finding all this out - I am one of the listed names above. My grandmother's middle name Hutton seems unheard of - I can only find Hutton as a male name or a surname, so do not know the derivation.

Re: Looking for grandad

hutton may be the surname of Mary's grandmother as this is common practice

I checked on Davids 2nd name and it did come up Eric

do you know if William 1896 had any siblings

Re: Looking for grandad

Thanks Dave - yes my granddad did have at least 1 brother James, and I know that the Lowe family emigrated to South Africa in the 1950's, except for my dad who had moved south to marry my mum in Worcester.
