Family not found in 1881 census ?

The rest of the family ??

Unassisted to Vic. from N= NZ
Age 40 206 JAN - 6 N 'WAIHORA' 1886 DOWLMAN, G MR

Possibly gibbo.

The trees don't say so but it's such an uncommon name. They show her as the 4th of 6 children but from the births I've found so far that is wrong.

Miriam 1879 is not the youngest. Charles Samuel 1889 born in Vic. seems to be the youngest with a reg. Followed by Luck.

Charles Samuel b. 1889 Vic. d. ??

Charles Somerville b. ?? d. 1889 Vic. aged 8 ?

Samuel b. 1885 NZ d. 1886 Vic. 11 mo.

2x Charles S or an error with middle name and an error with age as 8 years and not 8 months ?

If there are 2x then the birth in 1889 has to be after the death in Vic. in the same year.
And with age as 8 years the birth then is abt 1881 but not found in GRO or NZ index.

I don't know where the family was in NZ so can't search shipping records 1879 - 1885 assuming an arrival port.

If yours, may be a little late.. Anc. suggests this.

City Directories:
George Dowlman
Year: 1886
Residence: Roslyn

At least one tree points to this..

"Arrival 10 Jul 1880 Port Chalmers, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand"

Dunedin would fit with Roslyn.

Geoff

Thanks Geoff.

May have been compiled and published after the family left.

That would mean the birth abt 1881 was in NZ but not in the index.

One tree points to this, not checked.

Vic. Birth Index 1837-1913:

Thanks Geoff.

It would seem to be the correct birth and then 'adopted' as gibbo suggested later using Dowlman.

Passenger lists to Port Chalmers seem to end at 1851.

Only one arrived on that date:

'Mellowdale' London 13/04/1880 Port Chalmers 10/07/1880 88 days Capt Dorman

No mention of any passengers.

'Mataura' Gravesend 19/04/1880 Port Chalmers 13/07/1880 81 days Capt Alex Brown Brought out 25 passengers

Curious way the list is set up. No link for the first vessel but clicking on the link for second one gets a list.

Saturday July 17 1880 page 15
Arrivals:
Saturday - Mallowdale, barque, 1289 tons, Dorman, from London (April 13). Cargills, Gibbs, and CO., agents.
Passengers: Second cabin -
Bayldon Mr
Bartlett Mr and Mrs and 3 children
Blakely Mr and Mrs and 4 children
Camell Mr
Cook Mr and Mrs and 3 children
Dowman Mr and Mrs and child
Dowlinson Mr and Mrs and 3 children
Elworthy Miss
Hale Mr and Mrs and 3 children
Hooper Mr
Hooper Mr and Mrs
Hooper Miss
Stockwell Mr
Surfleet Mr
Turner Mr
Wanstall Dr

Something is not right.

If it is Dowman then we know at least two children born England arrived - John and Miriam.

It's not Dowman - that's John, Maria and F. Maria Dowman from a clear image of the newspaper.

The transcription of the newspaper article is inaccurate.

I have no birth for a Frederick and Miriam did arrive.
