Hello,

Marriage 14009/1921 POWELL REGINALD J G - WALKER MADELINE E - SYDNEY

The Sydney Morning Herald - Tuesday 7 June 1983 p.19
DEATHS
POWELL, Madeline Ethel.-June 5, 1983, at hospital, late of Gorokan, beloved wife of Reg (deceased), loved mother of Kevin, Colin, Marjory (deceased) and Keith, dear mother-in-law of Joyce and May and dear nanna of their families. Aged 83 years.

Looking for a birth for Madeline.

I'm wondering if WALKER is her maiden name.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,

As you probably know, a copy of the marriage certificate should tell you if Walker was her maiden name. Unless things are different Down Under.

Emeltee

Hello Emeltee,

Yes possibly. I have been all over the NSW BMD site and I can't find anything that explains what the minimum details are or what it contains if fully filled out.

I can try to guess the church and look for the marriage on film at the library or I can purchase a copy. It's not a direct line and I ordered another NSW marriage just last week so this one will just go on the 'maybe' list.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Julie,

Thank you very much.

I will check the 1921 fiche for NSW Electoral Roll next time I'm at the State Library. Might just be lucky to catch Madeline under her maiden name. I'll check 1922 as well.

Failing that I will wait 15 months for her death reg to be added to the on-line index.

Looks as though the newspaper notices in TROVE are not going to help solve this one.

Regards,

Dave

Thanks Geoff.

All we have is a birth in 1900 with the right name and an age at death that fits but nothing else to prove it's the right one.

Re post #9 I didn't check the fiche.

Time I got some sleep. Catch you tomorrow Geoff.

That marriage is the starting point. Death aged 83 in 1983, parents George and Dolly.

Then the assumption is the one born 1900 in Thoona, Victoria who then married in Sydney. ??

No sign of a wedding notice in newspaper. Nothing in death or funeral notices to tie her to siblings. It's not enough.

No mention of sister-in-law in Reg's notice.

Better look at her sister:

28440/1897 WALKER Esther Elizth - Geo - CARTWRIGHT Maria Frances - Glenrowan

See if a death notice mentions Reg.

Because of the connection to POWELL this one is a descendant of the SANDS line.

Empire (Sydney, NSW : 1850 - 1875) - Saturday 7 January 1860 p.4
MARRIAGES
POWELL - SANDS.-At the Scots Church, by special license by the Rev. Dr. Lang, D.D., on Monday, the 2nd January, Mr. William Henry Powell, harness-maker, a native of Limerick, Ireland, who arrived in the colony in infancy, to Elizabeth Celty, second daughter of Mr. William Sands, a native of Dunfermilne, Scotland, both residing at the Glebe.

Looks like Madeline's sister didn't marry:

Death 4104/1966 WALKER ESTHER ELIZABETH - GEORGE - MARIA - SYDNEY

Yep, I'm inclined to go with Julie's finds in posts 6, 7 and 8. Esther Elizabeth is with parents in 1930 and mother in 1933 & 36 and fits with the above death...
