This is my part of the country. Could be the minister of one parish was just making note of "his parishioner" who had married and moved away. Without looking at original that is the most likely scenario. I will take a look in case I have looked at this one previously too!

Alison is in the births as Alison Laidlaw born or baptised 8 June 1817 Eccles, Berwickshire to Michael Laidlaw born 1798 Westruther and Violet Hogg born1793 Greenlaw. But she is the first born and later baptisms are Violet Wilson. They have Robert 1819 in Smailholm, Roxburghshire and an Euphemia 1825 in Eckford, Roxburghshire and the other children 7 (including Alison) children are born in Berwickshire. Violet dies 1856 Ayton, Berwickshire. Can find no trace of Michael's death. Michael is in Greenlaw prison for assault in 1841. Born Houndslow, Westruther from the prison record

George Jaffrey is born or baptised to Peter Jaffrey and Mary Scott - not Maitland - 27 Jan 1812 Edrom, Berwickshire. Peter and Mary are both in the same village of Swinton in 1841 a few doors away from George and Alison. Peter is 60 and Mary 50.

Peter and Mary Jaffrey also had other children Margaret 1808, James 1809, James 1810, All sadly died. First James 6th May 1809 d 17.8.1809. Margaret born 25.3.1808 and died 18.7.1816. James born 17.8.1810 died 16.4.1834 All from gravestone in Swinton, Berwickshire. No sign of Peter and Mary. Did they emigrate too?

They could have died here but did search our gravestones and am not finding either of them and with them having a grave for their children I wondered if they had gone with George. Did you get my email?

Why would that be?
Pre 1855, in Scotland, what you usually get in the parish marriage registers are the reading of the banns. The banns had to be read aloud in church 3 times and usually at least one of the relevant dates was put in the records. If the couple came from different parishes then the banns had to be read in both, so that’s what’s probably happening here.

Note too that the records rarely give the date of the marriage and you can never be 100% certain it actually went ahead.

This is a christening Elwyn and the minister has just listed all the children when the family moved to another parish.

I have sent Dave the original as I live in this area and volunteer at the Archives so could do so easily.
