Hi

Can anyone tell me the youngest age that any of their ancesters married and had children as with research I appear to have a ancester that married at eight years old   and had a child at nine that lived for 10 days? The lady in question was Elizabeth Basson acording to census (Woolvercot, Oxon,1841) born abt 1801 who married Richard Tomkins of Gt Milton at Oxford St Mary Magdellen, on 3 March 1808, (There is annother candidate for who Elizabeth was, but as none of the children born 1810,1811,and 1815 (the last Elizabeth died age 15 within weeks of her father)were base born I have discounted her,

Please Help as I am thouroughly confused!

Gwen

Hi Gwen...not a pleasent list to read on the above link but it shows that your records cant really be accurate...maybe the marriage age but not the childs age...no wonder your confused!
Hi Leefer,

To say I am confused, I have been through the parish marriage records for Oxfordshire looking for Mary Tomkins parents marriage. They were Richard Tomkins Labourer ( I have this from Marys marriage Cert, Mary was aged just 15) I have Elizabeth aged 40 from 1841 census. I have then gone through the parish records for Woolvercot Oxfordshire and looked for baptisims for this family, which I have found, the first being for Elizabeth bapt 1810-10th August death 20th August 1810 parents Richard and Elizabeth Tomkins (labourer), as there is no mention of this child being base born and the only other marriage for a Richard Tomkins and Elizabeth Robinson took place in 1817 I have discounted them as being the parents of this child.

I have been goung round in circles for a few weeks with this one, and now I have the parrish records for Woolvercot I am even more confused,

Does anyone know the minimum age for marriage at this time, my only other conclusion is that the census age was wrong.( I have looked at the original immage)

Gwen :)

Hi Gwen,

I think the age was 12 for girls and 14 for boys.
Hi

It looks increasingly as though this Richard and Elizabeth were either from outside the county of Oxfordshire or that the census was wrong, I have tried looking for her in other censuses or her deathe with no luck. Thank you for your kind help.

Gwen:confused:
