marriage and birth records in USA

I have ancestors George BENNETT(1826) that went to America in 1852(29th March) on the ship name Kossuth, also traveling with him was his future wife Harriett Hodgson(1832) and her family,daughter of Thomas HODGSON(1805) a paperhanger,who stayed in USA and appears in the census in 1860,Morrisania, Westchester, New York and 1870- 1880, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
George and Harriett BENNETT are back in England by the 1871 census, with 2 sons born in NY.... abt 1854 George Thomas Washington, and abt 1855 William Charles.
How can I find their marriage records and the birth records of George and William Bennett? or date of their return trip to UK?

Hi Lucy,

The outbound passenger lists for England are at the National Archives Kew but they are for passengers travelling between 1890-1960.

The're not showing up on the USA 1860 or the 1861 England census. Seeing that Harry born 1864 Shoreditch Middx and Frederick born 1858 New York
assume that they came back between those years

I also came to that conclusion but....
Unfortunately, Frederick becomes UK born in 1881 census, so I'm really interested in how to find out births/marriages in USA...

Frederick Augustus Bennett birth 7-1-1858 christened 21-7-1858 St. Leonards Shoreditch, Middlex father George Bennett mother Harriett Ann.

Alas, there is no GRO which holds vital records in one place in the U.S. These records are held at the town or city level, sometimes at the county level, and at the state level.
My best suggestion to you is to check out the New York state page of u.s.genweb.com. It is the U.S. equivilent of the Genuki site. The New York state page will give you the information you need to locate where the information is held and you may find someone on the forum there to help with a look up.
If you haven't already, you might check the LDS site to see if they have a record which would give you a date and city for the events, if you don't already have them.
