In the 1901 census, Henry Burgess. aged 42 born 1856 probably in Charlton Kings, or Cheltenham or close by (his father Charles Burgess had a Nursery in London Road). Henry appears as an nurseryman ...? Employee with a wife called Frances ..... ? aged 38 of Lincs. Ha??? (not familiar with English towns)

1861 Census Henry aged 5
In 1871 Census, Henry is aged 15, living with parents at London Road, Charlton Kings, a Nurseryman's assistant.
In 1881 Census, Henry is shown aged 25, unmarried, living at Bramery Cottage, Charlton Kings, occupation Nurseryman, born at Charlton Kings.
1891 Census, Henry is 35 and a Nurseryman.
1901 Census, Henry is 42 and a nurseryman/gardener employee living in 21 Eckleston Road Parish of Ealing, Middlesex, Eng.

So he apparently married between 1891 and 1901

I was trying to confirm that Frances was on previous census as Frances Elizabeth Twigden, born 1864 Haxey Lincs, but I can't find her. She is on the 1911 census with Henry (and His sister Elizabeth Hudson) born Haxey.
I can't see why they married in Peterborough. Haxey is a village, in the reg district of Gainsborough, quite a way from Peterborough.

So he married in 1889 you think?

Whilst I don't physically have the 1891 census - these are my notes.

1891 Census
CHELTENHAM, Gloucestershire
RG12 piece 2041 folio 21 page 35

Address: Bromery Cottage, Rosedale, Charlton Kings (I think this should be Bramery Cottage)

BURGESS, Henry Head Single M 35 1856 Nurseryman Charlton Kings
BURGESS, Mary Sister Single F 42 1849 Housekeeper Charlton Kings
BURGESS, James W Brother Single M 33 1858 Nurseryman Charlton Kings

That was the family property where the Nursery was. He says he is single.

The 1911 census does prove tho that he was definitely married but not as early as 1889 surely?? Am I able to get a copy of the 1911 census?

The 1901 Census must definitely be him, as he is shown born in Charlton Kings, the age near enough to be right and the occupation (nurseryman something (I think its Gardener) - Only he was in Middlesex at the time (where his father came from)

I can confirm that Elizabeth Hudson is his sister too. She married James Hudson.

Well that information is obviously correct then, (the 1901 and 1911 census) he married in 1893
but then you showed me a marriage for 1889 and I have the 1891 census thus

1891 Census
CHELTENHAM, Gloucestershire
RG12 piece 2041 folio 21 page 35

Address: Bromery Cottage, Rosedale, Charlton Kings

BURGESS, Henry Head Single M 35 1856 Nurseryman Charlton Kings
BURGESS, Mary Sister Single F 42 1849 Housekeeper Charlton Kings

This looks like Frances in 1881:

Frances E. Gibson
Born abt 1861 Haxey, Lincoln
Occ: Morning Governess (T)

Civil Parish: Charlton Kings
County: Gloucestershire
Street Address: Ryeworth Lane Homeleigh
RD: Cheltenham
ED: 3
RG11; Piece: 2566; Folio: 49; Page: 3

Lucy Gibson 58
Alice L. Gibson 30
Gertrude B. Gibson 23
Frances E. Gibson 20
Mary G. Gibson 18

The marriage was in Q3 1891 so wouldn't appear on the 1891 census.

Burgess Henry
Gibson Frances Elizabeth
Lambeth 1d 576

Yes thanks Geoff, I am sure that is the one.

Any idea what a Morning Governess (T) - like what would the (T) mean?

Where did Henry Burgess & Frances Gibson get married?

Would Henry & Frances show on the 1911 census?

Could you confirm these details please?
1891 Census, Henry is 35 and a Nurseryman.
Mary, sister aged 42, Housekeeper
James W, brother aged 33 Nurseryman
In 1891 Elizabeth Hudson is living with them.
Is there any chance of finding a death of James Hudson (Elizabeth Burgess's husband) between 1871 & 1881? Although Elizabeth & James Hudson married in 1871 in Cheltenham, I have no other details of James.

I would assume that based on governesses looking after children, it would be one who does it in the mornings, say, for school lessons or similar.

They married in Lambeth, see post #10.

Henry and Frances are with Henry's sister in 1911...

Henry Burgess
Born abt 1860 Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire
Occ: Cartage Contractor

Civil Parish: Ealing
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England
Street Address: 23 Eccleston Road, W Ealing
RD: Brentford
Sub-RD: Brentford
ED: 19
RG14; Piece: 6886

Henry Burgess 51
Frances Elizabeth Burgess 47
Elizabeth Hudson 72

1891
Henry Burgess 35 [Nurseryman]
Mary Burgess 42 [Sister, Hosekeeper/Dom]
James W Burgess 33 [Brother, Nurseryman]
Elizabeth Hudson 52 [Sister, Marr.]

Will check for James Hudson's death, though in 1891 Elizabeth says she is mar. not widowed!

Thanks Geoff - I missed the part about them being married in Lambeth - still can't see it, but it's all I wanted to know ...... where...

Thanks for the other answers too.

Just one more thing - I only have this for 1901

1901 Census, Henry is 42 and a nurseryman/gardener employee living in 21 Eckleston Road Parish of Ealing, Middlesex, Eng.
Who was he with? Frances only?
I do know his sister was a visitor to people in Coverham Yorkshire in the 1901 census - thus ...
Elizabeth Hudson abt 1839 Marylebone, London, England Visitor Coverham Yorkshire Widow

Seems we can narrow the death of James Hudson to between 1891 and 1901

Thanks again Geoff. I appreciate all you've done.

Don't worry about the death of James. I don't even know when or where he was born. Only know that they married in Cheltenham in 1871 and that the Burgess family lived in and around Cheltenham and Charlton Kings.

Time to put the Burgess family aside for now, I have made some headway!
