No sign of a marriage on SP for William and Margaret SPEIR(S)/SPEAR(S)

James and Mary had eight children. Only one given a middle name. Can Newlands help in any way?

Naming pattern is not as expected but if you remove Janet and Robert you have William & Margaret for Mary's parents, as per death certificate.

been puzzling on this one Dave. Think prob Mgt is Wark not Spiers but proving it might be hard. You could check Mgt's birth to see if her father was a dyke builder the same as Mary's father?

There are several possibles but as you say hard to prove any of them.

Pity the William and Margaret SPEIR(S)/SPEAR(S) marriage can't be found.

I'm wondering if they are half-sisters. Yes, if Margaret's father was a dyke builder.


I should perhaps search for children with middle name Wark. And search for a death for a Margaret nee WARK.

I won't guess who the mother is for those as they could fit with either family.

It has solved one issue. They are not half-sisters as we clearly have 2x William.

You would expect William & Margaret Speir to name a daughter Margaret so main issue not solved.

If it fitted neatly we would have Mary abt 1794 and sister Margaret abt 1796.

the above have transcribed a lot of gravestones but not Largs yet. They do have Shearers and Spiers in their list though.

One good thing Barbara, we know the informant was correct as there is a William Shearer and Margeart Speir/Spier.
