Mary (Ann?) Burgess. 1899/1900 Manchester.

Hi all,
A bit of advice please and guidance.

My Gt.Aunt Mary, was born 1900, Stretford, Manchester, according to the 1901 census.

Her age is given as 10 months old. As the census was taken on 31st March 1901, that would make her born around May, June or July in 1900.

1901.
Joseph (Graham) Burgess. 26. b.Bowden, Cheshire. Occ. Fireman, Railway Engine.
Rebecca. 26. b.Salford, Lancs.
Olive. 2. b.Hulme, Manchester.
Mary. 10 months, Stretford, Lancashire.
Living at 9, Rixton St. Greengate, Salford.

There are 2 'hits'. plus a few near misses.

Rose Mary Burgess. a/m/j 1900. Salford.
Mary Jane Burgess. a/m/j 1900. Salford. (corrected)

All you Mancunian experts have any idea which one to go for. No recriminations if it's the wrong one.

You would have a common name in your tree Steve, making it harder!! Seriously though I have a "Mary" or two and in the same family so I know how confusing it can be!! Think I'd go for the "Mary Jane" option... good luck

That's a good point Julie, maybe the initial isn't used all the time- I have found that and it makes research harder.

That would be ideal Julie. I cannot find the family in 1911, but I'm getting help with that one, so fingers X'd.

Her elder sister Olive, married in Aylesbury, Bucks as the whole family moved between 1901 and 1915(the year of my Mums birth) down south at some point.

No definate births, deaths, marriages or anything else to go for that won't cost me an arm and a leg.

It's Jacob Moores grandaughter, so Mary is following in his footsteps.

I saw that Julie, might have to dig a bit there. I also noticed one for Luton, I did have an Uncle living in Luton. Hmmmmmm.

Stretford was a sub-district within the Chorlton Registration District. That particular Registration District was rather large covering most of South Manchester and not just the Chorlton on Medlock area. For more information see here.

Thanks Dave, I have no Sussannah, so perhaps I can discount that one at least. That's if the dates and area much up with the one you found.

I've took a punt on her brother, Norman. He was born around j/f/m 1911, so I've ordered his B/cert and hoping the address on it will be searchable in 1911. That's unless they moved between his birth, and the time of the census.

So it's all hanging on these two certs.

Mind you, that's if I have the right Norman and Mary Burgess.

3m living Battle sussex
8w Stourbridge
2m Salford
2m Blackburn
searching on the Salford name does not bring up any of the other names, ie Joseph, Rebecca Olive or Mary. Was your Norman born and living in Salford in 1911

I don't know Dave. As the family moved down to Aylesbury, Bucks between 1901 and 1912, I cannot pinpoint a birth with any accuracy (without spending a fortune), and as the family moved 'with the job', they could have been anywhere in England between those years.
I now know that Norman and Mary's sister Dorothy, was born in Aylesbury in 1912, along with my Ma in 1915.

Thanks Dave, this side of the family have been a nightmare, especially Mary and Normans maternal Grandfather, I sorted that one with loads of help, and some really, really extreme LUCK.

Further to my earlier reply. Stretford was/is one of those annoying places that fell into two areas being on the boarder with Hulme. I have had trouble with some of my lot who lived on City Road. Two families who lived yards apart were in different registration and enumeration districts. Bearing that in mind and the fact that you do not seem to be certain that Mary's middle name was Ann the following birth may be worth a dose of looking at:

I have not checked the GRO index to see which quarter the birth occurred so you may wish to do that.

Contrary to the information on Lancsbmd, some certificates can be ordered online from Trafford. The last time I ordered a certificate from Trafford, I stipulated the name of the father. The name did not match so they did not issue the certificate and they made no charge.

Thanks Gerard, I'll check them and Mary out.

Another of my problems is that My Gran had given birth to more children, who did not survive. She was essentially pregnant for 20 years, and I don't know how long these children survived for. It could have been weeks/months/years.
My Aunty Dolly did say my Gran, also had some stillbirths. Where and when, I'll never know.
Until I can match births with deaths for children, with mothers maiden name of Moore for whatever years, in whatever areas I'll never know the real truth at all.
Some of the surviving children also 'dropped' names, and at least one used his knickname all his life, and none of my siblings knew his real name.

I am searching, at present, for a cousin who is the the son of Norman who I haven't seen for years and years.

I wish I had started all this when I was 4 yrs old, and then it would have been easier. At least I would have known 3 of my granparents.
