Hello Ozn,

Thanks for looking. Sorry, but that was all I was given "in 1841 census as a charwoman" and all I can add is that she would be a widow.

I think she wouldn't be far from home, but that's not much help in 1841, since it only says born in or not born in county.

I'd say Warbleton was too far. More likely to be Westfield, Ore, Beckley, Brede, Battle, Hastings - that arc of parishes.

Regards,

Dave

Hello dave,

Thank you very much. It's my grandmother's family (FURNER) and I have them back to 1600s in Brede. I know for several hundred years they had a tendency to move around a bit in nearby parishes.

More of the family to follow.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. That one would fit.

re Mary CATT it's possible the charwoman and widow is still alive in 1851 as this looks a good fit for her death:

Deaths Sep 1858
Catt Mary Hastings 2b 20

Please see if you have any luck. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Re RIDDEL I noticed looking in England by chance in 1881 the more common spelling is RIDDELL. Lots of James born in Scotland but none with spouse Rebecca.

Hello crankypants,

I only have 6 Mary FURNERs :2fun:

Actually, that 1841 one you just found is a better fit to Mary (nee FURNER) born Brede in 1765 and not Mary nee COLEMAN.

This one would fit Mary nee FURNER with Brede in RD Rye. (Brede gets moved to RD Battle later)

Deaths Mar 1847
Furner Mary Rye 7 399

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

1881

Census Place Hastings All Sts, Sussex, England
Family History Library Film 1341242
Public Records Office Reference RG11
Piece / Folio 1022 / 98 Page Number 13
Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
George CATT Head M Male 49 Westfield, Sussex, England Hawker
Fanny CATT Wife M Female 59 Ashburnham, Sussex, England Laundress

Mary Ann J. FURNER Grandaur Female 10 Halton Hastings, Sussex, England Scholar ***
Please see if you can find them backwards, ie 1871... Thanks.

Spouse could be Frances FURNER but I'm not sure. Ashburnham does not fit at all for the Frances in my tree. That is too far to the west.

*** Can't find birth or parents. Not in my tree.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

:D Thanks. You just proved my doubts were justified. :D

It said that Mary was born in Brede and my Mary CATT nee FURNER was born in Westfield.

The only note I had re Mary was "charwoman in 1841" and nothing to indicate date of death or that she had been found in 1851.

There may be too many Mary CATTs to be sure about this death although the RD Hastings includes Ore where spouse Jessie CATT died.

Deaths Sep 1858
Catt Mary Hastings 2b 20

Here is a death that fits the one you just found:

Deaths Mar 1862
Catt Mary Hastings 2B 10

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. Now a new place of birth but still no help. Or a corruption of Ashburnham. :)

Please see if you can find them in 1861. Thanks.

I'll work on all the new FURNERs and see how they might fit in.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

This would fit considering when daughter Frances was born:

Marriages Jun 1857
Catt George Battle 2b 60
Furner Frances Battle 2b 60

Well the only Frances FURNER in my tree was born 1834 in Maresfield and that's even further away. So, I have no idea how to fit in one born abt 1824 in Ashburnham.

I don't have Annie or Jessy in my tree. ??? Annie's middle name might be Ellen but the entry has no parents listed.

It says daughters so are they daughters Frances had before she married George ?

Perhaps I should just work on the ones I do have in my tree. :)

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. So now it looks as though they are children of a brother of Frances. I'm lost with them. They are not in my tree and I can't see how they would fit.

90% of the FURNERS in my tree are in IGI as privately submitted entries. Someone, and I've not idea who, must have gone through the parish records. There is no entry for George born abt 1857 Hastings which makes me wonder if they are part of a totally different FURNER line.

Brede and other parishes of interest to me have not been put up on the Sussex OPC site yet.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

Could this be her 2nd marriage. I have come across children listed as 'in law' before which can also mean stepchildren.
