Another last ditch attempt to find an Irish lady - married in Rochdale in 1886 - to Peter Goodwin. Marriage cert says she was a domestic servant, living in Rochdale at the time aged 23.

Father William John Gallagher. Witnesses WM Melia and M Goodwin.

Hi

I'm really sorry for the delay in responding.

It's really good of you to look this up for me.

I have an open mind and I'd love this to be my Mary. She is about the right age but has not used the initial A on any other record.

I will keep this information in mind though and hopefully will at some stage be able to work out the link...

Many thanks once again, it is appreciated.

Hi
Just a note - on the latest census Mary's place of birth was Dephoe, Co Donegall. Is this near Ballyshannon which is also in donegall, if so the Mary found could be the one

EDIT - NO SUCH PLACE AS DEPHOE, MARY'S HANDWITING IS NOT TOO GOOD, BUT I THINK IT SHOULD BR RAPHOE

Hi P
I'm guessing you have Mary in 1891/1901 listed as bn Ireland, sorry no place.

Good find Dave. Can't seem to find anything like Dephoe/Defoe in Donegal
Transcription error perhaps??

oznannie

sorry forgot to add she was born in 1864 both census & in the latest one.

HI Ozn

Just checked Dephoe, no such place, but there is Raphoe, Co Donagall. Mary's handwriting is not good, but I think that is what she wrote. Trouble is, although in Donegal, its a long way from Ballyshannon

Hi P :)
The witness to marriage WM Melia, could that be William? or is it W.M. Melia??
I've found a William in Castleton Rochdale making him 19 at the time of marriage. Not sure if witnesses had to be over 21 at this time.
Doesn't help in finding Mary.
She may have still been in Ireland at the time of 1881 census??

Hi

Thank you all for looking into this.

The W M Melia is interesting as a Castleton link. Mary's husband lived with his mother and father in Castleton, Rochdale in 1871, aged 8. They continued to live in Castleton but in 1901 had moved to Wardleworth.

Mary has only ever put "Ireland" on the census records that I've got. I'm living in hope that she may have been more forthcoming in the 1911 records and perhaps named a place(!) Family rumour is that she came from Leitrim although they may be confusing her with her mother-in-law who actually put Leitrim on some of her records...

Leitrim does border with South West Donegal, so there just might be a link there.:)

Hi

Many thanks for all your help.

I've actually now seen the 1911 census and the Mary on that, (stating that she came from Donegal) - is definitely my Mary - all the children are right and she's on her own as her husband died in 1901.

So she finally declared where she came from. I've googled Raphoe and it's a lovely small town which hopefully will make it easier for me to trace someone with such a popular name!!!!!!

As usual - living in hope!!!!

Many many thanks once again. I never thought she would ever be found.

Many thanks once again to everyone that has helped on this one for so long.

I'm absolutely thrilled....

1901 Peter Silk Dresser
Elizabeth M Cotton Weaver
living 9Ct Regent St Rochdale

Thats it I'm afraid, not a lot

Thanks for the addresses too for 1891 and 1901.
