Hiya
Can anyone give me some advice please??:(
my grandma Mary Hughes born Dublin 1884 married in 1908 James Henry Walker at Islington in the section for address on the marriage cert both bride and groom have given the same has 1 carville st Islington
I thought this to be unsual due to my grandma being a strict R/C ,that she should be living in the same household has her intended and his family
so I contacted a local father of the R/C church and was told that she would have given this address so has to be able to marry in that area and that it would be safe to assume that she lived in a different parish
in my search I have found James and family Hawkins living at carville st in the 1901/11 census and have found James and Mary in the 1911
but have not been able to locate Mary in English or Irish census for the years before her marriage
Has for Mary her father was Michael Hughes a labourer not sure of mothers name:eek:

Shushshhh - both my mother and father gave their address as that of a friend, because they wished to marry in a church other than where they did live. I understand you were supposed to live in the parish where you were to marry and issue bans for three weeks before, giving people the opportunity to contest it.
The church could refuse to marry you if you were not of that parish'

Yes, that's very true. I came across the same problem when I married in 1974. The Vicar at my local church was a drunk, arrogant and a hypocrite. So I tried to marry in the next parish, but had to provide an address in that parish for the banns to be read, which wasn't a problem.
Luckily, the vicar retired just in time for me to get married in the church where generations of my family had gone before.:2fun:

I think you will need to buy your rellies births cert, but finding the right one will be trial and error.:(
