I think Andrew SCOBIE senior married Mary HUNTER and she is probably the one alive in Peebles in 1882. The shipping records usually give the mother's maiden name although on the image 'Mary Hunter Peebles' is written on Janet's line. I think the shipping record has nothing re parents for Janet.

Andrew junior married Janet HUNTER and I think her mother was Mary.

James as per 1851 age 3 born Cockpen. This is curious:

James Hunter
birth: 3 August 1847
christening: 24 October 1847 , COCKPEN, MIDLOTHIAN
residence: 1847 Cockpen, Midlothian, Scotland
father: William Hunter
mother: Mary Snedden

James Hunter
birth: 3 August 1847
christening: 7 November 1847 , NEW MONKLAND, LANARK
residence: 1847 New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland
father: William Hunter
mother: Mary Snedden

Both extracted C batch records.

Ok, I'm not really sure how to read that shipping record.

It usually gives the father's given name and the mother's given name and maiden name.

If we have the right Andrew then he is married to 3rd wife Sarah by 1861 so Mary can't be SCOBIE in 1882.

Andrew SCOBIE born abt 1810 should be alive in 1871 and 1881 census.

One says Kinross and one says Falkland (Fife) so don't know where Andrew was born. Not born Peebles.

I can find 3 old enough in 1881 census:

Andrew Scobie
1806 Fife
Cockpen, Midlothian

Andrew Scobbie
1811 Lanarkshire
New Monkland, Lanarkshire

Andrew Scobbie
1806 Stirlingshire
Polmont, Stirlingshire

No sign of spouse Sarah in 1881.

Found Sneddon earlier but half discounted it, will have another look at that too..

So Mary 1y is Mary 11y in 1871?
