Mary Pritchard

Hi, Can anybody help with finding the death of Mary Pritchard. She was born circa 1838 in Monmouthshire and appears in the census for 1871, married to James Pritchard with 4 daughters, and in the 1881 census as a widow with 2 more daughters in Llangattock (some of her elder daughters are close by as servants). However, I can't see her in the 1891 census, and can't find a death either! Any help would be appreciated. Gilllisa

Having looked at the partial death index there was one born abt 1836 died 1912 district Newport, but if this isnt her have you considered that she may have remarried.

:biggrin: Hi Julie, Thank you again, if you haven't found the right death??? (I don't know how to check this because a census would be to recent), then how would I go about finding a remarriage? Sorry to just keep asking questions, but I really don't know how to go about these things. Many thanks for your help. Gill

This looks as it could be her as there is a marriage in 1884 district Newport M for a Emily Pritchard and one of the grooms listed is a married Tom Henry Horton.

Hi Juliejtp, Many thanks for this mine of information. I will try and follow it all through, but on reading it all, it seems to me that you have struck gold!! The age for Mary is right, and I know she had six daughters with James Pritchard, one of whom was named Emily - age 8 in 1871. She also had a daughter named Celia (so Emily may have named her daughter after her sister). The other tie in is that Emily's dau Celia was born in Llandough, and Mary's eldest dau (Mary) also moved to Llandough. Just for the record Mary sen.'s six daughters with James Pritchard were Mary, Emily, Elizabeth, Celia, Leavinia and Alice.

Thank you so much for your help with this (I wish John Hill was so easy!!!!!!!!) - having said that I would never have found this info on my own. Gilllisa

Hi Gilllisa,

Just looking on the 1881 census Wales found Joseph Beal with family including Edith, mothers name Sarah Ann, so if it is the right family that would account for Edith Beale being 12 in 1891 and Joseph and Mary marrying in 1885. Will now look for a death for Saran Ann Beal(e).

I found a possible marriage of James Pritchard in Newport Reg district in the Dec Quarter of 1860. Ref 11a 319. On the same page is a Mary Davies.

The 1871 census says that John and Mary's residence of LLangattock was in Newport district.

A possible marriage for James and a possible maiden name for Mary.

Hi Julie & Ben, Many thanks for the additional information you have unearthed for me. I'll order the birth certificate of one of Mary & James' children and see if she was a Rogers or a Davies! The Beale side was very interesting - I had assumed that Edikth was Joseph & mary Beale's dau, but obviously not. I can't tell you how grateful I am for the info you've been providing.

Incidentally, returning to John Hill (Mary Pritchard jnr.'s husband). There was a squiggle where his father's name should have appeared on their marriage cert. Any ideas on how to proceed with him? I assume his father was either dead or unknown, or that he was orphaned. Would there be any way round this?

Hi Ben, Yes you've probably helped Skip (his grandfather and mine turned out to be brothers and we are in touch). Trouble is John Hill is still defeating us (which is why I switched to his wife Mary Ann Pritchard). Unless something has come up with you and Skip reasonably recently - we're still stuck and can't find him before the 1891 census (mistranscribed as Hile, but with the right family). Were there any records on orphans etc., and where would I find them?

Hi Ben & ulie, Have got birth cert for Celia (one of Mary's daughters) and her maiden name was Davies - so we have her parents William & Susanna Davies. Hooray!! Back another generation and many thanks for your help and suggestions Gilllisa
