Was her father a THOMPSON but did she take the TURNBULL name?

I could have the wrong Mary in the census. Is this her parents marriage?

Mary was born abt 1854 from age in shipping record. Her death reg in Australia only lists her mother as Mary. That may or may not be correct if the informant didn't know her father's name. Died 1889 in NSW but no age at death and can't find a death notice or burial record. The reg lists Mary's initials as T. G. T = Thompson but I don't know what the G is for. I don't have a death yet for Alfred as there are several possibles.

That's a help knowing father is Joseph.

The next thing I'm wondering about the 1861 census in post #1 if Mary's middle name has been transcribed as her surname and that James is Joseph's brother possibly.

in 1871 there is a Mary Turnbull born 1854 Stepney mdsx lodging as a hat trimmer in Hyde Cheshire. Alfred 1849 was born in Hyde to Joseph and Hannah

I have googled and did find some info but nothing that resolved all the issues.

One question I would like resolved and that is the census in post #1 the right one with an error in it?

No sign of a Mary TURNBULL born 1849 - 1857 with father = Joseph or any father and who married Affred WARD. I can see no Alfred WARD in the index.

There are several sites and I've searched TCA so far.

This is the only Mary 1852 - 1857 ruling out all those with middle names not Thompson and it's not Stepney:

I can't find a tree with Mary.

I'm fairly sure Ashton or part of it used to be in Cheshire, it's only about 5 miles N of Hyde.

Alfred's mother came from Denton, which is only 2 miles W of Hyde.
