Hello,

Another convict in my tree but I'm having a hard time finding any other details such as date of CP or Full Pardon.

Mathew was born somewhere in Ireland, possibly near the town of Castlepollard about 1770 and that he had been convicted in County Down in August 1796 and given a life sentence in consequence of some people being killed by soldiers under his command in a skirmish in the village of Loughbrickland. He arrived in the colony in May 1797 in the hell ship 'Britania' ...

Not sure if this is helpful, Dave..

1828 New South Wales, Australia Census (TNA Copy)
Name: Mathew Hughes
Arrival Date: 1797
Vessel: Brittania
Piece: HO 10/23
Province: New South Wales
Title: Census E-H
Year(s): 1828
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1740
[Image says age 57 which is correct, 1740 must be an error, has 9 offspring]

There is this, a quote from a story I'm sending you.

"Governor Macquarie who had signed his Absolute Pardon in January 1818. He had already been given a Conditional Pardon by Governor King in June 1802."

Thanks Geoff.

More in CS than I expected but not much else. Can't see him listed in Applications to Marry or the Convict Index on NSW State Records or in the QSL Transportation Database.

Ozigen is just a huge tree and like all trees not 100% accurate. Many of those in my tree are also in Ozigen.

Matthew Jr death:
14150/1905 HUGHES MATHEW H, MATHEW, MARY, RICHMOND

Wife, Sarah's possible death:
12536/1906 HUGHES SARAH, WILLIAM, ELIZABETH, GOULBURN

Possible marriage, Mary S:
5116/1889 TURNER OSWALD H, HUGHES MARY S, RICHMOND
Most of the trees don't have her marriage and an odd one has it as FURNER!

Oswald's possible death, ? Herbet Oswald:
22198/1937 TURNER HERBERT OSWALD, WILLIAM, ADA, CASINO

Can't find a death for Mary Susannah, trees have it as 1946 Crookwell.

I don't have a copy of the marriage and can't find it in TROVE but I suspect it's an error in the index. There are a few like that among the FURNERs in my tree.

Oswald has a convict ancestor on his mother's side but we've covered that one already.

I think that's it for this one thanks.

I'd better find something new to work on.
