Hello,

I'd like a look up please for this family in 1851.

Piece: HO107/141/7 Place: Penwith -Cornwall Enumeration District: 8
Civil Parish: Crowan Ecclesiastical Parish: -
Folio: 54 Page: 3
Address: Tremayn
Surname First name(s) *** Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MATTHEWS Benjamin M 45 Farmer Cornwall
MATTHEWS Mary F 35 Cornwall
MATTHEWS Mary F 15 Cornwall
MATTHEWS Martha F 10 Cornwall
MATTHEWS Sarah F 8 Cornwall
MATTHEWS Elizabeth F 6 Cornwall
MATTHEWS Caroline F 2 Cornwall
MATTHEWS Sophia F 4m Cornwall
MATTHEWS Mary F 65 Independent Cornwall

Specifically, I'm trying to see if 'Martha' appears in 1851 or if somehow that should be 'Jane' in 1841.

Thanks.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. The fact that Martha is there is 1851 and that the image shows Martha for both years answers one question. But, because Sarah is not there in 1851 I have to ask several more questions. Did Sarah die and does the image for 1841 show her as Sarah? Or is it an error and Sarah is the 'Jane' who left in 1847 for South Australia?

Jane MATTHEWS
ABOUKIR 1847
from London And Plymouth left Plymouth, UK on June 1st
Arrived Port Adelaide on Saturday September 4th, 1847

I'm looking for a Jane MATTHEWS supposedly born 1831 in the village of Crowan with father Benjamin and mother unconfirmed.

Jane died in 1878 in Ballarat and her death certificate says:
"Died 18 Feb 1878 Armstrong St Ballarat Jane TAIT [her 3rd marriage] 46 years Benjamin Matthews farmer Jane Matthews formerly Matthews - Redruth Cornwall 26 years in Victoria..."

Some say her mother is Mary COOK but apart from the Mary as wife of Benjamin I have no evidence.

There is no sign of a Jane MATTHEWS born about 1831 in the 1841 census.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

The image in 1841 census is Sarah. I rechecked the 1851 census just in case she's living elsewhere, no Sarah born in Crowan.

FREE BMD has three deaths between 1841-1851 for Sarah MATTHEWS in Cornwall.

No Jane Matthews in 1841 that has father Benjamin.

Do you have any of her marriage certificates to check for parents.

cheers

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. Yes, a real mystery.

Yes, I have a copy of the 3rd to Daniel TAIT.
15 Feb 1878 (YES  died 3 days later) age 46 born Redruth - parents Benjamin MATTHEWS and Jane MATTHEWS maiden name MATTHEWS.

That's the same as on her death certificate where the informant was Daniel TAIT.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

From another of Jane's marriage certificates (I don't have a copy) her mother is listed as a Mary COOK / ****. That's the only ref to it not being Jane MATTHEWS.

Every record in Australia lists John's spouse as Jane yet there is no sign of a Jane born about 1831 with father Benjamin in the 1841 census in Cornwall.

The records in South Australia 1842 to 1855 seem to have lots of gaps. John & Jane didn't arrive together so they may have married soon after arrival but we probably can't prove it. We probably can't even sort out the births and deaths of all their children.

An examination of the shipping records in Adelaide may shed light on John and Jane in the months after they arrived in 1847.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

:D v :D

Benjamin MATTHEWS Spouse: Mary ****
Marriage: 29 OCT 1825 Crowan, Cornwall, England
Batch: M022262

That is the family in Crowan for sure. Still does not explain where Jane was in 1841 on census night

Regards,

Dave
