Hello all,

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this request. I'll try.

I’m looking for information about two sisters the first is Stella Beatrice Pope Hennessey born about 1864 in I believe London, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada and the other is Maud Teodora Pope Hennessey born about 1866 in London, Canada.

I can find no record of their birth in England.

Their father was Sir John Pope Hennessey and their mother was Anna Maria Conynghan who died in 1867 in Surrey, England. They did not marry. She was born in about 1836 possibly Ireland. The name is also spelt as Conyngham.

In 1871 Maud is living with Charles and Ann Moore in Vauxhall Bridge Road, London. She is described as their adopted child with the name Hennessey. Then in 1881 she and her sister are in a convent as boarders with the name Hennessey. In 1891 Stella is a school mistress at St. Mary’s Priory she died in 1893.

I can’t find any record of Stella in 1871 or who might have adopted her. Equally, I can’t find Maud after 1881 and there doesn’t appear to be a death record for her. Could she have emigrated? Can anyone help please?

Thank you,
Maisy

Hi Julie,

Thank you for finding the article and book, I found them both most interesting. I did find John Hennessey's Will some time ago. There was no mention of his daughters in his will. He died in 1891 leaving £10, 504 14s 10d. to his widow Katherine Elizabeth Hennessey. Interestingly, Anna Maria Conynghan/m left £100 in her Will to Sir John with no mention of her daughters. I wonder what evidence the author had that Sir John Hennessey kept in touch with his daughters all of his life. The author offers no evidence so I'll take that with a good pinch of salt.

Thank you again. I'll keep looking for Maud (or Mary).

Hennessy, not Hennessey. A little on the two girls in my [P Kevin MacKeown] upcoming "A Stormy Petrel - the life and times of John Pope Hennessy" City U Press HK, by the end of the year.
