William ended up in NSW. I'm trying to narrow down the period for searching for him in shipping records.

Mr. McCallum, who was bom at Ayr, Scotland, entered the Wesleyan ministry in 1882. His first appointment was Bourke-street, then followed appointments at Chippendale, Parramatta, Ashfield, Tenterfield, Lismore, Gunnedah, Kempsey, Hay, Cootamundra, Wollongong, Toxteth, Granville-Liverpool, Kiama, and Windsor.

Age is out but possible given the name of the vessel.

MCCALLUM William 27 Aberdeen 1885 Sydney arrived October Reels 2143, 2496

Different William - That is an iron turner from Renfrew CofE.

He married in Sydney in 1887. I'll look for signs of parents and siblings in NSW tomorrow.

Now I don't suppose William is still in Ayr in 1881 but he might still be in UK if he didn't enter the ministry until 1882. That still leaves five years before he is known to have been in NSW.
