Thanks Geoff.

Now I'm a bit lost - 2x William - roughly same age and occupation.

This is the family that ended up in Australia ...

1881
Registration District: Maryhill
Civil Parish: Maryhill
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 330 Saracen Street
McFARLANE William 41 Irondresser (Unemployed) Glasgow, Lanarkshire
McFARLANE Agnes 38 Glasgow, Lanarkshire ??
McFARLANE John 17 Apprentice Iron Moulder Glasgow, Lanarkshire
McFARLANE William 15 Apprentice Iron Dresser Glasgow, Lanarkshire
McFARLANE James Mc G 13 Message Boy (Telegraph) Glasgow, Lanarkshire

McFARLANE Allen 9 Scholar Glasgow, Lanarkshire
McFARLANE Agnes 7 Scholar Glasgow, Lanarkshire
McFARLANE Watt 5 Glasgow, Lanarkshire
McFARLANE Isabella C 3 Glasgow, Lanarkshire
McFARLANE Robert G 10 Mo Glasgow, Lanarkshire

... and that seem to fit with the family at 7 Cedar Street in 1871.

The Dobbie's lane family is probably wrong, William is a potter [wondered what a rotter was :)] Still there in 1881. So that one probably ruled out.

This has the same add. as 1851..

RD: Milton
Civil Parish: Glasgow Barony
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 117 Maitland St
ED: 22; Page: 6; Line: 6; Roll: CSSCT1861_106

Henry Rankine 50 [b. Edinburgh. Mason]
Janet Rankine 52 [b. Alloa, Stirlingshire]
Robert Mcfarlane 26 [b. Glasgow. Cotter]
William Mcfarlane 21 [do. Iron Moulder]
Eliza Mcfarlane 19 [do. Pooter, painter]
Ann Rankine 19 [do. Servant [domestic]]
Laurance Rankine 14 [do. Iron Moulder [domestic]]

Looks like a remarriage for Janet. So there may be a link between Janet [1871] and Dobbie's Lane after all, I think :eek:

Thanks Geoff.

Working backwards we have:

Death 7687/1908 MACFARLANE WILLIAM - WILLIAM - - WATERLOO

The Sydney Morning Herald - Monday 18 May 1908 p.6
DEATHS
MACFARLANE.-May 17, 1908, at his residence Possil Park, Picton-street, North Botany, William MacFarlane, late of Eveleigh Government Workshops, native of Glasgow, aged 66 years. At rest. Home papers please copy.

Cemetery record had his age as 47 so let's ignore age at death. All we have is father = William.

'Aberdeen' Oct 1885 Reels 2143, 2496
McFARLANE William 44 and family
McFARLANE Agnes 40 and family
McFARLANE William 19 pob
McFARLANE Allan 13 pob
McFARLANE Agnes 12 pob
McFARLANE Watt 9 and family
McFARLANE Isabella 7 and family
McFARLANE Robert 4 and family

Departed Pylmouth 8 Sep 1885 Arrived Sydney 25 Oct 1885
William Labourer Lanark Presby Yes
Agnes Ayr Presby Yes
** Can't read film - ink smudged **

Shipping record points to the 1881 census which points to the 1871 census at 7 Cedar street. Deaths for Daniel and Edward ??

At 1861 census William b. abt 1840 Glasgow is unmarried but we have 2x.

The 'potter' is a 'moulder' in 1871 then.

Does that mean William's father died 1861 - 1871 and spouse Janet IZETT married Henry RANKINE?

But William the shoemaker b. Renfrew is still alive and a shoemaker in 1861.

We don't have enough birth/baptism records.

I have found something that throws it wide open.

Names of children in order of the William in the shipping record:

Daniel, John, William, James, Edward, Allan, Agnes, Watt, Isabella, Robert

William Mcfarlane
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 13 Oct 1839
Christening Place: , RUTHERGLEN, LANARK, SCOTLAND
Birth Date: 03 Aug 1839
Father's Name: Daniel Mcfarlane
Mother's Name: Marion Watt
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C11654-4

1st son = father's father ?? if death reg is wrong with William
2nd son = mother's father - yes
3rd son = father - yes
1st dau = mother's mother - yes

Parents of Agnes McGREGOR are John & Agnes.

I think this one is correct. It does not say Rutherglen though. Slightly better fit with age if born 1839 Rutherglen not 1838 Barony.
